OpenTelemetry Traces, Stored Where You Collect Them
Point your OpenTelemetry SDKs or Collector at a Netdata Agent. The same agent that collects your metrics and logs receives, stores and indexes your traces, on your own infrastructure. Explore every request in the Traces tab of Netdata Cloud, next to the per-second metrics of the nodes that served it.

Tracing Without Another Backend to Run
One agent for metrics, logs and traces, with the spans kept on your own disks
OpenTelemetry Native
Any OpenTelemetry SDK or Collector can send traces over OTLP (gRPC or HTTP), to the same agent endpoint that already receives OTLP metrics and logs.
One Agent, Three Signals
The Netdata Agent that collects your metrics and logs also receives, stores and serves your traces. There is no separate tracing cluster to deploy.
Traces Stay Home
Spans are stored on the receiving agent’s own disk, not in Netdata Cloud. Cloud brokers access to them, the same way it does for metrics and logs.
Every Span Indexed
Span names, kinds, statuses and span, resource, scope, event and link attributes are indexed, plus a trace-ID index for whole-trace lookup.
Retention You Control
Traces have their own size, age and file-count limits, separate from logs and metrics, with optional offload to S3-compatible object storage.
Secure Ingestion
Protect the OTLP endpoint with TLS or mutual TLS, and keep tenants isolated from each other with multi-tenant ingestion.

How Netdata Compares
Netdata Tracing vs a Separate Tracing or APM Tool
Teams that already run Netdata for metrics and logs can add traces without deploying and operating another storage and query stack. Where a dedicated APM suite goes further, we say so.
Capability
Netdata
Separate Tracing or APM Tool
Deployment
✅ Simple
Same agent that collects metrics and logs
⚠️ Complex
Collector, storage and query services to run
OpenTelemetry Ingestion
✅ Good
OTLP over gRPC and HTTP from any SDK or Collector
✅ Advanced
Often OTLP plus native Jaeger or Zipkin
Data Location
✅ Ideal
Spans stay on your own agents
⚠️ Varies
Self-hosted cluster or vendor cloud
Span Indexing
✅ Advanced
Names, statuses and all attributes indexed
⚠️ Varies
Depends on backend and storage choice
Infrastructure Context
✅ Ideal
Per-second metrics and logs, same UI
⚠️ Manual
Separate metrics and logging tools to check
Retention Controls
✅ Advanced
Size, age and file limits, S3 offload
⚠️ Manual
Tuned per storage backend
Secure Ingestion
✅ Advanced
TLS, mutual TLS and multi-tenant isolation
⚠️ Varies
Configured per component
Dependency Mapping
🔹 Network-Based
Application dependency map from live TCP and UDP connections, without instrumentation
✅ Good
Common in mature tracing and APM tools
Code Profiling
🔹 OpenTelemetry tracing
RED analysis, waterfall and span details on your agents
✅ Good
Offered by full APM suites

Distributed Tracing In Netdata: OpenTelemetry Traces
Netdata now ingests OpenTelemetry traces over OTLP on the same Agent that collects your metrics and logs. Spans are stored and indexed on your own infrastructure and explored in the new Traces tab in Netdata Cloud.
