📚 Description

kit is meant to be a non-breaking public SDK, but we occasionally do have breaking changes - e.g. c12, ufo, scule, etc. - not to mention things like unimport/nitro.

this is a first effort for exposing a public api for nuxt/kit that is not dependent on any other public types (except, for now, on nitropack and any specific types exposed from nuxt/schema).

the idea is that where there are breaking changes we paper over them in kit's implementation. potentially we might do things like wrap nitro handlers for backward compatibility, for example.

this also moves most internal kit exports (including diagnostics) into a separate export - these are only meant to be used by nuxt itself.

Walkthrough

The change adds Nuxt-owned public types for imports, hooks, manifests, logging, ignore matching, case conversion, and option merging. Kit now exposes internal utilities through @nuxt/kit/internal and updates its public contracts. Nuxt, Nitro Server, Vite, and Webpack migrate internal imports to that entry point. Generated declaration files gain dependency validation. CI runs public API tests. Documentation reflects the updated type names.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 600d6

The PR establishes a stable public API boundary, but validation still omits the Schema builder-environment entrypoint, allowing unsupported external types to leak into the public surface and weaken compatibility guarantees. Merge should wait for this entrypoint to be covered or for the exception to be explicitly accepted.

Validate the Schema builder-environment declaration.

packages/schema/tsdown.config.ts emits a public declaration for src/builder-env.ts, but entrypoints only validates packages/schema/dist/index.d.mts. An unallowlisted external type in the builder-environment entrypoint will therefore pass CI. Add its generated declaration to entrypoints with explicit types and augmentations allowlists.
