Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Devices can receive command notifications and publish result acknowledgements over MQTT. When MQTT execution is enabled, online status reflects MQTT readiness, and commands are not handled through Broadcast.
    • MQTT setup supports automatic device enrollment, cached credentials, and a configurable broker. In observation mode, command execution remains with Broadcast.
    • Result acknowledgements are retried when delivery fails.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on MQTT startup modes, enrollment, broker configuration, readiness, telemetry, result delivery, and testing.

- Introduced automatic MQTT startup during Broadcast connection without requiring flags.
- Updated MQTT command/result handling to improve execution and notification processes.
- Refactored MQTT transport capabilities to ensure Broadcast readiness is independent of MQTT failures.
- Added new tests for MQTT shadow and enrollment processes, ensuring robust error handling and recovery.
- Deprecated `MQTT_TRANSPORT_ENABLED` in favor of `MQTT_EXECUTION_ENABLED` for clearer configuration.

A readiness write failure after reconnect permanently stops the receiver.

The connect handler runs again after every reconnect. On a reconnect, setMqttReady(true) can reject when the capability write fails. A transient database error is enough to cause this. The .catch then calls finish(), which does nothing because startup already settled. It also calls this.stop(). stop() sets stopped = true and calls end(true), so MQTT.js stops reconnecting. RemoteChannel.mqttReceiver still points to the stopped receiver, and no code restarts it. In execution mode (MQTT_EXECUTION_ENABLED=true), isReachable() then stays false until the process restarts. The device stays offline for the rest of the run.

Call stop() only while startup is still pending. After startup has settled, keep the connection open. Retry the readiness write on a later attempt, or leave ready = false and let the next reconnect try again.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

A successful session restore drops a call that onDoorbell already claimed.

handleSignedOut() increments authGeneration before the restore attempt, so the increment also happens when the restore succeeds (Line 465 returns). The following sequence drops a call:

  1. An onDoorbell claim is in flight.
  2. A transient SIGNED_OUT arrives, and the restore succeeds.
  3. The claim commits (pending -> executing).
  4. The generation check at Line 1194 returns before dispatchToolCall.

The row then stays executing until the server timeout, even though the device is still healthy. Move the increment so it runs only when the session is actually lost. The handlingSignedOut flag already blocks new doorbell work during the restore window.

The startup deadline also covers the database capability write.

The startup timer uses connectTimeout (10 s). It covers three steps: the TLS connection, SUBACK, and onReady(true). onReady(true) awaits setMqttReady, which awaits writeTransportCapable. That write can take up to DEVICE_ROW_WRITE_TIMEOUT_MS (10 s). A slow database write can therefore use the full budget after the broker has granted the subscription. The timer then calls stop() and rejects startup. In execution mode, registerDevice rethrows this non-ChannelUnreachableError, and MCPDevice.start() exits the process.

Give the startup timer a budget that covers the connection timeout plus the capability write. Alternatively, clear the timer after SUBACK and let the readiness write settle by itself.

A recovered sign-out abandons calls that this device already claimed.

handleSignedOut() increments authGeneration before it attempts the session restore. On the restore-success path (Line 457), the session continues and the MQTT receiver keeps running. The generation has still changed.

This breaks in-flight onDoorbell() calls. One of them may have already committed the pending -> executing claim when the generation changes. The check at Line 1215 then returns before dispatchToolCall. The row stays executing and the tool never runs. The call fails only when the server reaper times it out.

Doorbells that arrive while handlingSignedOut is true are also dropped. This applies to onMqttDoorbell, onBroadcastDoorbell and onDoorbell. After a successful restore, nothing calls recoverPendingCalls(), so those rows stay pending until timeout.

Increment authGeneration only when the restore fails, next to this.sessionLost = true. After a successful restore, start a pending-call recovery.

Review of this PR together with the backend side. We read the code, ran the full test suite on Windows 11 and macOS, and ran local tests against the built code: a local MQTT broker with TLS, a fake database and a temporary home. Nothing touched AWS, staging or production.

The plan we reviewed against: MQTT goes out first as shadow. The device only observes MQTT, and Broadcast keeps running every call. The rollout goes up step by step to 100%, and we compare. If the numbers look good, execution moves to MQTT, and later Broadcast is turned off.

A. Before the shadow rollout (A1–A3 affect every user, even with every rollout off)

  • A1 Every device creates a key and requests a certificate at every start (inline).
  • A2 A short sign-out now loses calls for everyone (inline).
  • A3 Reconnects have no backoff; two processes on one profile kick each other off (inline).
  • A4 Once MQTT stops, nothing starts it again (inline).
  • A5 Logout and revoke leave the old key and certificate. device.ts:71 and :431 delete only device.json, so the next device id on that machine fails enrollment ("credentials belong to a different backend, user, or device") until the folder is deleted by hand. Suggestion: delete the .mqtt folder together with device.json.
  • A6 Shadow mode still publishes results, with the full output when the payload rollout is on (inline).
  • A7 mqtt-enrollment.test.js isn't in the suite and fails on Windows; test:mqtt uses the real home (inline).

B. Before switching to execution

  • B8 transport_mqtt_v1 is written in shadow mode too (inline).
  • B9 In execution mode, an MQTT failure at start closes the device. device.ts:303 exits on anything but a channel error: enrollment refused, AWS down, port 8883 blocked by a firewall, or a cached certificate of another device id (inline for the timer).
  • B10 A device clock 30 s or more fast drops every MQTT call (inline).
  • B11 The doorbell must have exactly 4 keys (inline).

C. Smaller: the default broker for staging, and no clock tolerance on the certificate's start time (both inline). The new tests don't use runIfMain and stop at the first failure. Commit 758a3582 uses the old name MQTT_EXECUTION_ENABLED.

Good: no credential leaks found; the key never leaves the device; enrollment is HTTPS-only without redirects; the atomic claim prevents double runs.

Tests at 63897fb4

  • Full suite: Windows 149 of 149, macOS 149 of 149.
  • Timing tests run alone: 28 of 28 on both.
  • The PR's test-mqtt-config, test-mqtt-doorbell, test-mqtt-shadow and test-transport-telemetry pass on both.
  • mqtt-enrollment.test.js, run by name: passes on macOS, fails on Windows (A7).

Questions

  1. Switching from shadow to execution: the device reads IS_MQTT_EXECUTION_ENABLED as a per-user rollout, and the backend decides execution from different switches, so they can disagree (B8). Would it work for you if the backend decides per call and the device follows what each call says? Then the device wouldn't need its own execution rollout.
  2. Devices outside the rollout (A1): should they start MQTT at all, or only once the user is in the rollout?
  3. The sign-out change (A2): was dropping calls during a session restore intended, or a side effect of the new checks?
  4. Blocked networks in execution (B9): for a user whose network blocks port 8883, should the device stay on Broadcast, show offline, or exit? Is MQTT over port 443 planned?
  5. Two remote processes on one profile (A3): supported? With MQTT they keep kicking each other off.
  6. Results over MQTT in shadow (A6): intended, for example to measure something?

A1: MQTT starts here for every user, with no switch. For a user outside the rollout the backend refuses enrollment (404): the key stays, no certificate comes, the next start asks again, and the terminal shows [MQTT] Shadow transport unavailable; Broadcast continues each time. Local test with a user outside both rollouts: 2 starts, 2 enrollment requests, a key file saved. Suggestion: start MQTT only when the user is in the MQTT rollout, and start or stop it when the rollout changes.

A2: bumping authGeneration before the restore means a claim in flight returns without running the call (:1214), and the new handlingSignedOut checks (:739, :1171) drop calls arriving meanwhile; nothing rechecks pending calls after a successful restore. The same local test on both commits: main ran both calls, this PR ran neither. This hits every user, not only MQTT. Suggestion: bump only when the restore fails, and run recoverPendingCalls() after it succeeds.

A3: a fixed 1–2.5 s reconnect, forever. In an AWS outage every device in the rollout reconnects at once; a revoked certificate fails a TLS handshake every ~2 s per device. Two remote processes on one profile (same client id) keep kicking each other off: locally, 8 connections and 16 device-row writes each in 15 s. Suggestion: exponential backoff with jitter and a cap, reset on SUBACK, and a hard back-off when kicked right after connecting.

A4: after start-up, a failed capability write calls stop(), and nothing starts MQTT again, so the device sends no shadow data until it restarts (and in execution it stays offline). The same when the first start fails. Locally: 0 broker connections in the 8 s after the database recovered. Suggestion: keep ready=false and let the next reconnect retry; a small supervisor restarts MQTT with backoff when it should run.

B9: this 10 s timer also covers the capability write, which can take up to 10 s by itself, so a slow write fails the start. In execution mode device.ts:303 then exits the process. Locally: SUBACK after 1.5 s plus a 9 s write → "MQTT connection/subscription timed out" at 10 s. Suggestion: stop the timer at SUBACK or give the write its own budget, and in execution stay up and retry instead of exiting.
