fix(remote): presence no longer decides whether a device gets tool calls - #859
Conversation
A device is ready once its channel is joined and its row advertises it (capability, then status). Presence is sent once per join for the dashboard dot only; a failed track() waits 5 -> 60 min before the next one and never withdraws the capability, skips the heartbeat or marks the row offline. Failed readiness writes retry on their own 5 s -> 60 s backoff, and every rejoin writes its own 'online'. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Readiness no longer means "joined". It now requires the capability write and the status write to land.
markChannelReadyInner()insrc/remote-device/remote-channel.ts(Line 681) logs✅ Device ready (device …)when readiness succeeds.If readiness fails, the
SUBSCRIBEDhandler has already printed✅ Channel subscribedbeforeregisterDevice()rejects. The user then reads "commands start working once you see '✅ Channel subscribed'". That line is already on screen, yet the device is still not reachable. The comment at Lines 274-277 has the same stale reference.Point the hint at the readiness log line.

A failed readiness write clears channelReady, so an earlier join's late success can't leave the row offline with no retry. The online write is skipped when the channel dropped during the capability write, so it can't land after the drop's offline. The startup hint now names the "✅ Device ready" line. The device no longer writes transport_broadcast_v1. The row's capabilities now hold only app_version, so registering also clears a flag that an older build left on the row. A join now makes one row write (status) instead of a capability write followed by status. The capability withdrawal after failed reconnects is gone. last_seen is written every 5 min for every device, through the same ordered queue as the other status writes, so a drop's 'offline' always lands last. The server sweeps a row offline after 15 min, and the dashboard trusts it for 7 min. Ship this only after the remote server change that stops refusing devices without the flag is live. On an older server, every call to a device running this build is refused. Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Summary
Presence no longer decides whether a device can receive tool calls. It only feeds the dashboard's online dot.
A device is ready when its channel is joined and its
mcp_devicesrow says so (capability, thenstatus = online). Presence is sent once per join, on the side. Why
On 2026-10-13 Supabase Realtime's
PresenceHandler.track/2hit its 5 s timeout, and that timeout ends the whole channel. Devices then looped: join → track → channel dies → rejoin → track again. Dispatch fell to 12% for ~49 min.The device made it worse because it treated presence as required:
createChannel()rejects, noonlinewrite, no heartbeattransport_broadcast_v1withdrawn, so the server refuses every callPresence is not needed for dispatch. The server never reads it; it dispatches by
statusand the capability flag. Only the dashboard reads presence.Presence failures are also not rare. Daily
remote_channel_presence_track_errorshare in BigQuery: 10-05 55%, 10-06 19%, 10-07 32%, 10-08 23%, 10-13 83% (14k–45k devices/day). On normal days it is 0.4–0.65%.What changes (
src/remote-device/remote-channel.ts)online, no heartbeat, capability withdrawn after 5 mintrack()per join; after a failure wait 5 → 10 → 20 → 40 → 60 min (+0–50% random); rejoins inside the wait don't tracktrack()every 10 sonlinewriteonline; a failed write clears ready, so the retry runsonlinecould land after the drop'sofflineonlineis not written for a dropped channel#844's reconnect backoff now resets once the row writes land, not once presence works. What stops the 10-13 loop is the presence wait: a rejoin does not track again until it ends.
Unchanged: the 75 s heartbeat watchdog, capability withdrawal after 3 failed recreates, the offline write on every channel error, and the 5 min heartbeat.
DB writes for a healthy device are the same as before: 2 at join, 1 heartbeat every 5 min.
Compatibility
transport_broadcast_v1andstatusexactly as the current prod server expects.last_seen< ~7 min).remote_channel_presence_trackednow means presence only; it used to fire only when the device was fully ready. No dashboard or monitor reads it today, but BigQuery queries that used it as "device ready" should split by version.Tests

Faults were injected by a test-only preload: presence never answered, presence answer killing the channel,

onlinewrite recovers within seconds of the fault ending, and the case-6 race (held write, drop, rejoin's own write refused) recovers by itself in 8 s, where d2ea539 would wait for the next 5 min heartbeat.Follow-ups (separate PRs)
transport_broadcast_v1, one 15 min sweep tier, dashboard dot as above. Ship the dashboard change before or with the release carrying this PR: after a long presence outage the wait is 60–90 min, so the dot would stay grey that long.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
