Reusable containers without an explicit name are now named testcontainers-reuse-<first 12 chars of hash>. Docker's name uniqueness means only one of several concurrent starts can create the container; the others get a 409 Conflict and poll until the winner's container is running, then reuse it. A stopped leftover with the same name and hash is removed so a fresh container can be created. Reclaim orphaned reusable containers without deleting active creators.
If the JVM terminates after createCommand.exec() and before startContainerCmd, the reusable container is not registered with ResourceReaper. A later start receives a name conflict, ignores the created container, and waits for a running container until the one-minute timeout. The failure is then reported as ContainerLaunchException.
A same-hash container in the paused state has the same timeout path because the lookup accepts only running, and cleanup removes only exited or dead containers.
Do not reclaim created containers by age alone. The winning starter performs file copies, network setup, and containerIsCreated between creation and startContainerCmd. If that work exceeds the threshold, a concurrent starter can remove the active winner and cause its start to fail. Use an ownership or lease mechanism that distinguishes an active creator from an orphan before reclaiming stale created containers. Apply an explicit lifecycle policy to paused containers as well.

Agreed that a start killed between create and start can leave the container orphaned. Commit 780994e (pushing next) fixes that:
- A
createdcontainer with a matching hash that is older than one minute counts as orphaned. It is removed by ID and recreated. Losers now wait up to two minutes, so a start that begins right after the orphan was left behind still recovers. - A
pausedcontainer fails fast with a clear error and is not removed, because pausing it is a deliberate user action.
I didn't add a lease or ownership mechanism. The point of this PR is to replace #11980's locking with Docker's name uniqueness, and a lease would bring that machinery back. The age check can only remove an active winner if that winner spends more than a minute between create and start, i.e. copying files into the container. If that happens, the winner's start fails, and the next attempt joins the recreated container. A new unit test covers the orphan path.

@kiview Thanks for explaining the design constraint. Docker name uniqueness should remain the coordination mechanism; I am not insisting on a lease.
The proposed orphan cleanup and fail-fast policy for paused containers address those cases. The age check remains a heuristic: it can remove an active creator during a file copy that takes more than one minute.
One clarification: startupAttempts defaults to 1. After removal causes the active creator to fail, that caller does not automatically retry unless retries are configured. A later start can join the replacement container.
I accept this as an explicit trade-off, rather than a guarantee that active creators cannot be removed. The pending commit and its tests remain unverified, so this finding stays open pending verification.

Learning: In testcontainers/testcontainers-java, PR #12126 intentionally uses Docker container-name uniqueness instead of locking to coordinate reusable-container startup in GenericContainer.java. The author wants to avoid reintroducing lease or ownership coordination. A paused reusable container represents deliberate user action and should fail fast without being removed.

A start that is killed between create and start leaves the named container in "created", which would block every later start of the same reusable container. Treat a "created" container older than a minute as orphaned and replace it, and fail fast on a paused one. A smaller alternative to #11980.
When several JVMs or threads start the same reusable container at the same time, all of them see no running container with the hash, so each creates its own. This PR fixes that without
synchronized, lock maps, or backoff, by relying on Docker's name uniqueness.testcontainers-reuse-<first 12 chars of hash>.findContainerForReuse(hash)for up to 1 minute, until the winner's container is running. Then they reuse it.exited/dead) container with the same hash, for example after a Docker restart, that container is removed by ID and the name is claimed again. Without this, the leftover would block reuse.Tests
ReusabilityUnitTests: the name is derived from the hash, and a create that gets a 409 joins the container that is already running.ReusableContainerConcurrencyTestruns against real Docker:mainthey produce 8.Generated by Claude Code
