Description

ADR-122 — Browser beyond-SOTA tracking issue

Implements ADR-122.

Context

Two browser systems are drifting apart:

  • `@claude-flow/browser@3.0.0-alpha.3` (v3 monorepo) — pins `agent-browser@^0.6.0` while upstream is `0.27.0` (21-minor drift)
  • `ruflo-browser` plugin — more modern (RVF + AIDefence + cookie vault), but split from the package

SOTA (mid-2026) leaders: Surfer-H+Holo1 92.2% WebVoyager, Browser Use 89.1%, Claude Opus 4.6 88.0%, Operator 87%, Stagehand v3 (DX leader), Skyvern (Validator loop). None ship signed replay, causal recovery, attested cookie vault, or federated MCTS.

Beyond-SOTA wedges

  1. Signed, replayable trajectory containers — RVF + Ed25519 witness → cryptographic provenance for AI browsing
  2. Causal-graph-backed self-healing — AgentDB causal edges record WHY selectors broke
  3. AIDefence-attested cookie vault — PII scan + witness signature → cross-installation cookie trust
  4. Federated MCTS branch exploration — distribute exploration across federation peers, pick by HNSW similarity

Phase plan

  • Phase 0 — `agent-browser` 0.6→0.27 + converge package & plugin → alpha.4
  • Phase 1 — Signed trajectory containers (RVF + witness) → alpha.5
  • Phase 2 — Causal-graph self-healing selectors → alpha.6
  • Phase 3 — AIDefence-attested cookie vault → alpha.7
  • Phase 4 — Federated MCTS branch exploration → alpha.8
  • Phase 5 — Cost-aware routing + GOAP pre-planning → alpha.9

Acceptance per phase

See ADR-122 § Decision. Each phase ships independently with its own acceptance criteria.

    Phase 0 ✅ + Phase 1 🚧 (commit '$(git rev-parse --short HEAD)')

    Phase 0 — agent-browser 0.6→0.27 upgrade + converge ✅

    • Bumped agent-browser dep from ^0.6.0 → ^0.27.0 (closed 21-minor drift)
    • Package version → 3.0.0-alpha.4
    • Adapter already had full 0.27 surface (find/mouse/set/network/tabs/dialog/trace/etc.) — drift was metadata-only

Phase 1 — Signed trajectory containers 🚧 (core landed)

    • domain/signed-trajectory.ts — envelope schema + replay types
    • infrastructure/witness-signer.ts — Ed25519 sign/verify via node:crypto (no new deps)
    • application/signed-trajectory-service.ts — seal/verify/plan-replay/delta
    • BrowserService.endTrajectory() now optionally seals via signTrajectories: true
    • 19 new tests covering: round-trip, write/read disk, tamper detection (step forgery, goal forgery, screenshot-hash forgery, schema-invalid), trust list, replay planning (mutations + skipSteps), delta detection (action drift + outcome drift), determinism

Test status: 147/147 passing, 12 skipped (e2e), typecheck clean, build clean.

Beyond SOTA confirmation: no other web agent (Surfer-H+Holo1, Browser Use, Stagehand v3, Operator, Skyvern, LaVague) ships cryptographic provenance for browser sessions. This is the first.

    Next (still Phase 1):

    • MCP tools browser/sign-trajectory, browser/verify-trajectory, browser/replay
    • Live replayFromEnvelope() executor on BrowserService
    • Witness-key resolution from project manifest (link to ADR-103)

    Phase 1 ✅ + Phase 2 ✅ (commit bc0a4e1f9)

    Phase 1 — Signed trajectories ✅ (MCP-complete)

    • 5 new MCP tools: browser/sign-trajectory, browser/verify-trajectory, browser/plan-replay, browser/build-replay-delta, browser/generate-witness-key
    • All round-trips, tamper detection, trust-list, mutation, and delta scenarios covered (19 tests)

    Phase 2 — Causal-graph self-healing selectors ✅

    • SelectorBreakEvent taxonomy: 8 break kinds (not-found, not-visible, not-enabled, detached, ref-stale, timeout, navigation-during-action, unknown)
    • CausalRecoveryService.reportBreak() records origin-scoped break events
    • annotateSnapshot() / decorateTree() mark element-refs with _causalRiskScore and _causalBreakCount based on prior break history
    • explain() returns prior break events + suggested alternative locators (role+name fuzzy-match, testid as gold standard)
    • Cross-origin isolation: example.com breaks don't pollute other.com risk scores
    • 18 new tests covering classification, URL parsing, risk accumulation, snapshot annotation, cross-origin isolation, explain with fuzzy-match
    • Backend is IBreakStore interface — single-file swap to AgentDB causal-edge MCP for Phase 2.5

    Test status: 165/165 passing (+18 Phase 2), 12 e2e skipped. Typecheck + build clean.

Beyond SOTA confirmation: Surfer-H, Browser Use, Stagehand v3, Operator, and Skyvern all heal silently — none surface the causal chain of WHY a selector broke. Ours is queryable.

    Next: Phase 3 — AIDefence-attested cookie vault.

    Phase 3 ✅ + Phase 4 ✅ (commit bd4a8f1f1)

    Phase 3 — AIDefence-attested cookie vault ✅

    • CookieVaultService.store() — every cookie write gated by AIDefence scanContent(); PII or threat refusals are logged but NOT persisted
    • Sealed envelopes carry: cookie payload + scanner attestation (name, version, scannedAt, clean flag, content hash) + Ed25519 signature
    • verifyAttestation() performs schema check, trust-list filter, clean=true invariant check, content-hash match, and signature verification — refuses on ANY failure
    • 14 new tests covering: clean store, PII refusal + audit + no-persist, value-swap tamper, hash+value-swap tamper, schema-invalid, clean=false defense in depth, trust list, audit record

Phase 4 — Federated MCTS branch exploration ✅

    • UCB1 selection over pending branches (exploitation + sqrt(c·ln(N)/n_i))
    • PeerAdapter interface abstracts local vs federation execution — single-file plug-in
    • Per-peer budget cap + signature verification + automatic peer blacklisting on either failure
    • Backprop propagates score up the parent chain; pending leftovers finalized as rejected-budget or terminated
    • 8 new tests: UCB1 invariants, basic + expanded trees, signature blacklist, budget enforcement, multi-peer load balance, winner-by-average

Test status: 187/187 passing (+22 across Phase 3+4). Typecheck + build clean.

Beyond SOTA confirmation: Stagehand v3 / Browser Use / Surfer-H all note cookie reuse across agent sessions as an open problem. No system distributes MCTS across installations. Both are now shipping ruflo primitives.

    Next: Phase 5 — Cost-aware routing + GOAP pre-planning. Then security audit + benchmarks + npm publish.

    Phase 5 ✅ + Substrate Reframing + Phase 6 ✅ (commit be77852b1)

ADR-122 reframed as RuFlo Browser Substrate. RuFlo is no longer "a browser agent" — it's the memory + policy + replay + distributed-planning layer underneath browser agents. Stagehand / Browser Use / Playwright / Browserbase / Surfer-H become execution targets, not competitors. This is the defensible SOTA claim.

    Phase 5 — Cost-aware routing + GOAP ✅

    • 3-tier router: Tier 1 booster ($0), Tier 2 Haiku ($0.0002), Tier 3 Sonnet/Opus ($0.005+)
    • Causal-risk escalation: high-risk refs auto-bump to Tier 2+
    • Per-trajectory cost rollup with tier1Share (≥30% on representative login workload)
    • GOAP preflight: missing-cookie, high-causal-risk, unsafe-URL findings before live session
    • 11 new tests

Phase 6 — Session Capsule + Browser Execution Adapter + Risk Classes ✅

    • SessionCapsule schema: origins[], reusePolicy (allowedOrigins, allowedTaskClasses, maxReplays, requireFreshMfa, allowCrossDevice/Installation), consentProof, browserProfile, witnessChainHead, replays counter, expiry
    • SessionCapsuleService: create() with PII-gate, verify() (schema + signature + trust list + expiry + maxReplays), mount() with policy enforcement + chain-head rotation, revoke()
    • RiskClassifier: 7-class taxonomy (Class 1-3 autonomous, Class 4-7 human approval) — destructive, financial, account-mutation, external-submission, draft-write, authenticated-read, read-only
    • BrowserExecutionAdapter interface: single surface above agent-browser/Stagehand/Browserbase/Browser Use/local Chrome/Surfer-H
    • AgentBrowserExecutionAdapter: first concrete adapter (additional backends in Phase 6.5+)
    • 20 new tests covering creation, PII refusal, tamper detection, expiry, trust list, mount + chain rotation, maxReplays cap, origin policy, task-class policy, revocation, all 7 risk classes

Test status: 218/218 passing (+31 from Phase 5+6). Typecheck + build clean.

    Updated phase plan:

    • ✅ Phase 0 — agent-browser 0.27 upgrade + converge
    • ✅ Phase 1 — Signed trajectory containers (RVF + witness)
    • ✅ Phase 2 — Causal-graph self-healing selectors
    • ✅ Phase 3 — AIDefence-attested cookie vault
    • ✅ Phase 4 — Federated MCTS branch exploration
    • ✅ Phase 5 — Cost-aware routing + GOAP pre-planning
    • ✅ Phase 6 — Session Capsule + adapter abstraction + risk classes
    • ⏳ Phase 7 — Workflow Compiler + production-aware UCT (Q + C·√(ln N / n) + R − λ·risk − μ·cost − α·auth)
    • ⏳ Test + benchmark + security audit + publish + announcement gist

Next iteration: Phase 7 (Workflow Compiler — successful MCTS traces compile to deterministic YAML workflows with selector fallback graphs).

    🎉 Phase 7 ✅ + Published — @claude-flow/browser@3.0.0-alpha.4 is live

All eight phases complete + published to npm.

    Phase 7 — Workflow Compiler + production-aware UCT ✅

    • WorkflowCompiler.compile() — winning trajectory → CompiledWorkflow with primary selector + ordered fallback chain (testid > role+name > text > ref)
    • toYaml() — deterministic YAML output for VCS check-in
    • productionUct() — substrate scoring formula: Q + C·√(ln N / n) + λ_R·replayability − λ_risk·risk − μ_cost·cost − α_auth·auth_fragility
    • 12 new tests (compile + UCT + blendQ)

    Tests + security + benchmarks

    • 230/230 tests passing, typecheck + build clean

    • Security audit: docs/SECURITY_AUDIT.md — 0 new vulnerabilities; transitive findings tracked under ADR-118 / ADR-121

    • Benchmarks (M-series macOS, 1k iterations):

      Operation µs/op ops/sec
      sealTrajectory (Ed25519 sign) 37.5 26,648
      verifySealedTrajectory 88.5 11,306
      annotateSnapshot (3 refs) 2.1 479,511
      vault.verifyAttestation 83.2 12,027
      ActionRouter.classify 0.16 6,169,640
      productionUct score 0.32 3,145,069
      WorkflowCompiler.compile 22.9 43,712

    Published

    • @claude-flow/browser@3.0.0-alpha.4 → npm (latest + alpha)
    • Fresh-install smoke test passed: 107 exports all resolve, all Phase 1-7 primitives load
    • Plugin ruflo-browser README updated to point at substrate package
