PrimeFaces is one of the most popular UI libraries in Jakarta EE Ecosystem and widely used by software companies, world renowned brands, banks, financial institutions, insurance companies, universities and more.

License

PrimeFaces is now fully open source and maintained by the community. The project has been handed over by PrimeTek to the open-source community, and ongoing development depends on contributors and sponsors.

Development model

PrimeFaces follows a simple lifecycle:

• Active

  • Current development branch
  • New features, improvements, and bug fixes are accepted
  • This is the main focus of contributors

• Maintenance

  • Stable releases after feature completion
  • Only bug fixes are applied
  • No new features are introduced

• Security

  • Older supported versions
  • Only security-related fixes and critical issues are addressed

• EOL phase

  • Last ~6 months before End-of-Life
  • Only critical security fixes are applied

• EOL

  • End-of-Life, no more fixes or releases

End-of-Life (EOL) policy

PrimeFaces releases a new major version roughly every ~6 months.

• The 4 newest versions are fully supported (Active, Maintenance or Security).
• When a new version is released, the oldest of them enters the EOL phase until the next release (~6 months).
• During the EOL phase, only critical security fixes are applied.
• With the next release, it reaches EOL: no more fixes or releases.

This keeps 4–5 supported version lines at any time. Release dates are estimates based on the ~6 month cycle.

Exception: 15.x is the last version supporting javax. Since many users can't move to Jakarta quickly, 15.x is an exception to this policy and stays supported longer.

Community-driven development

• PrimeFaces is now fully driven by the open-source community.
• Development, maintenance, and issue handling are done by volunteers and contributors in their spare time.
• Active development relies heavily on community involvement and sponsorship.

If you use PrimeFaces in production, consider supporting the project through sponsorship. This helps maintain momentum across active development, maintenance, and security releases.

Commercial Support

PrimeTek no longer offers PrimeFaces PRO to new customers. Commercial support is now provided by the PrimeFaces project lead through neroe.org – the alternative to PrimeFaces PRO.
