zlib.zstdCompress() pledges the size of its input to zstd when the caller gives no pledgedSrcSize. It tested the option for truthiness, so it also replaced an explicit 0, -0 or NaN, and zstd did not check the caller's pledge. It took the size of a string from its UTF-8 length, so a string with another defaultEncoding failed with ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong. Port the wrapper of nodejs/node#66358: pledge only when pledgedSrcSize is undefined, and do not pledge for a string that the stream does not decode as UTF-8. An empty input gets a pledge of 0.
… an exact byte length The port of withPledgedSrcSize() pledges only if defaultEncoding is "utf8" or "utf-8", as Node does. Before the port, Bun pledged for every string. So a string with defaultEncoding "UTF8", or an ASCII string with latin1, lost its content size, and zstd sized its tables for an unbounded stream. Pledge also for the other spellings of UTF-8 and for latin1, binary, ascii, utf16le and ucs2. Buffer.byteLength() is exact for them. It is not for hex and base64, so those strings get no pledge. Cite the commit of Node that the port follows (fa4af16414). In the test, ask the runtime if it validates pledgedSrcSize: the version check was wrong for Node v24.20.0 and v24.21.0.

…werCase hasExactByteLength() called encoding.toLowerCase(), which user code can replace. A replaced method changed which strings got a pledge: a hex string could get one, and the call failed with ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong. Capture String.prototype.toLowerCase when the module loads. Say in the test header why the file uses node:test.

…encoding The stream gets a copy of the own enumerable options. So a defaultEncoding that the options object inherits, or one that is not enumerable, does not reach it, and it decodes the string as UTF-8. The wrapper read the option through the prototype chain and pledged the latin1 or utf16le size, so zstd failed with ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong. Pledge for an encoding other than UTF-8 only if defaultEncoding is an own enumerable property. In the test, pass the options as a rest parameter, so that an explicit undefined reaches zlib.zstdCompress() as its second argument.

The latest push addresses the inherited-defaultEncoding pledge and the test's undefined variant, and this run found no new bugs; a maintainer look is still worthwhile because the PR deliberately makes Bun's zstd frames differ from Node's (a content size for latin1/ascii/utf16le/ucs2 strings that Node's reviewers chose not to pledge yet) and knowingly drops the auto-pledge for pledgedSrcSize: null/false/"" callers pending #44278 — both are product calls rather than correctness questions.
What was reviewed:
withPledgedSrcSizeagainst the old inline branch: presence gate (!== undefined) replaces truthiness, size 0 now pledged, invalid inputs fall through to the existing validation.- The own-enumerable check for non-utf8 encodings matches what
ZlibBaseactually spreads into the stream ({ autoDestroy: true, ...opts }), andoptsnull/undefined never reachespropertyIsEnumerable. - Both new primordials (
toLowerCase, propertyIsEnumerable) are captured at load and invoked via$call; the test's node subprocess drains stdout/stderr concurrently and usesawait using.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the zstd-only auto-pledge branch in createConvenienceMethod (src/js/node/zlib.ts) with a prepareOpts hook and a ported withPledgedSrcSize, and adds a 296-line node:test file that also re-runs itself under system Node. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the worst outcome of a wrong pledge is a ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong rejection, which the tests cover for explicit 0/-0/63/65 and for hex/base64 strings. All inline findings from earlier runs were either fixed in commits f669f4d/4dda3050/e5d802d0 or explicitly deferred by the author to #44278; no third-party objection is outstanding and no CODEOWNERS entry covers these paths. Approval is withheld only because the PR intentionally diverges from Node's observable output for non-utf8 string encodings and accepts a performance regression for null-pledge callers, which are maintainer decisions.
…the stream gets The stream decodes a string with the defaultEncoding of the options copy that the engine gets. That copy has only the own enumerable options. withPledgedSrcSize now makes the copy first and reads the encoding from it. So an inherited or non-enumerable defaultEncoding gives the UTF-8 size, as on main, and a getter is read one time.

I reviewed the two commits pushed since my last pass and found no bugs; because the PR deliberately diverges from Node on which string encodings get a pledge (and adds a node:test file beside zlib.test.js), a maintainer's look is still worthwhile before merging.
What was reviewed:
- withPledgedSrcSize now reads defaultEncoding from the null-prototype copy it hands to the stream, so the pledge and the stream's decoding agree for inherited, non-enumerable and getter-backed encodings; ZlibBase's spread at src/js/node/zlib.ts:222 only sees own enumerable properties, which the copy satisfies.
- Checked each spelling in hasExactByteLength against Buffer.from lengths: ascii/latin1/binary are 1 byte per code unit, ucs2/utf16le are 2, so the pledge cannot be wrong; hex/base64/base64url fall through with no pledge as intended.
- The test helper's rest-args form now passes an explicit undefined options argument through to zstdCompress rather than collapsing it into the no-argument call.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the inline zstd pledge block in createConvenienceMethod with a prepareOpts hook and a withPledgedSrcSize port of nodejs/node fa4af16414 in src/js/node/zlib.ts, and adds a 311-line cross-runtime test file at test/js/node/zlib/zstd-compress-async.test.ts. It touches no security-sensitive surface; the tamper-resistance concern (user-overridable toLowerCase) was already addressed with a captured StringPrototypeToLowerCase.$call. The last two commits address the inherited-defaultEncoding mismatch and the undefined-sentinel test gap I raised earlier, and I found nothing new in the current diff. It is not approved outright because the PR intentionally pledges for latin1/ascii/ucs2/utf16le where Node only pledges for utf8, silently un-pledges null/false/""/0n pledges with a documented cost at high compression levels, and places tests in a new node:test file rather than the module's existing bun:test file, all of which are maintainer judgment calls. No build was available in this checkout, so the test file was reviewed by reading rather than executed.

#47027 includes this change with the rule of Node.js v26.12.1. |

Problem
zlib.zstdCompress(input, { pledgedSrcSize: 0 }, cb)succeeds for a 64-byte input. Node.js fails withZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong.createConvenienceMethod(src/js/node/zlib.ts:718) tests!opts?.pledgedSrcSize. So a falsy pledge counts as no pledge.Fix
withPledgedSrcSizefrom Node.js (nodejs/node@fa4af16414, not in v26.10.0). It pledges only ifpledgedSrcSizeisundefined.Buffer.byteLength()is exact: UTF-8, latin1, ascii, utf16le. It readsdefaultEncodingfrom the options copy that the stream gets. Node.js pledges for"utf8"and"utf-8"only.test/js/node/zlib/zstd-compress-async.test.ts(23 of 42 tests fail on main, none on Node.js v26.3.0). Alsozlib.test.js.Background
pledgedSrcSizedeclares the input size. zstd writes it to the frame header and sizes its tables for it. A wrong pledge fails the call.zstdCompress()ends the frame in a second write, so zstd cannot infer the size. Bun pledges it since Async zlib.zstdCompress creates data that causes out of memory error when decompressed with Bun.zstdDecompressSync #23314.Downsides
pledgedSrcSize: null,"",falseand0ngot the default size. Now Bun ignores them (node:zlib: zstd ignores a pledgedSrcSize that is not a number, and zstdCompressSync does not check the pledge (Node v24.21.0 and v26.8.0 reject both) #44278). At level 22 that call takes 34 ms and 746 MiB, not 0.3 ms and 42 MiB.Notes
Upstream. nodejs/node#66358 ("zlib: pledge input size in async zstdCompress()") landed on Node's main branch on 2026-09-29 as
fa4af16414. It is in no release (v26.10.0 does not have it).withPledgedSrcSizeand theprepareOptsparameter follow itslib/zlib.jshunk, with three differences: Bun keeps itsmethodNameparameter, the string branch pledges for more encodings, and the string branch readsdefaultEncodingfrom its copy of the options. The reviewers of nodejs/node#66358 left those encodings for a later change (thread), becauseBuffer.byteLength()counts characters that the hex and base64 decoders skip.Buffer.byteLength(s, enc)is equal toBuffer.from(s, enc).lengthfor UTF-8, latin1, binary, ascii, utf16le and ucs2 in each spelling (4000 random strings with lone surrogates, Bun and Node.js: 0 mismatches. hex, base64, base64url: 3290 of 4000).What each runtime gives. Input of 64 bytes unless the row names another. "size" is the content size in the frame header. "+ fa4af16414" is the landed wrapper on that Node.js binary, as a preload script built from public API (the commit has no native part). 52 call classes probed. The table has the rows that differ somewhere.

The stream decodes a string with the
defaultEncodingof the options object that the engine gets. With a default pledge that object is the copy{ __proto__: null, ...opts }, which has only the own enumerable options. So the wrapper makes the copy first and readsdefaultEncodingfrom it: the pledge and the stream use one value, and a getter runs one time. AdefaultEncodingthat the caller's object inherits, or that is not enumerable, does not reach the stream. The string"h\xe9llo w\xf6rld"is 13 bytes in UTF-8 and 11 in latin1:{ defaultEncoding: "latin1" }srcSize_wrongObject.create({ defaultEncoding: "latin1" })defaultEncodingown, not enumerabledefaultEncodingfrom a class getterAn empty input and inherited options. On main an empty input skipped the copy, so the engine got the caller's object, with the options that the object inherits and the ones that are not enumerable (
info, maxOutputLength, params). Each other input got the copy. Now an empty input gets the copy too. Probed with 3 inputs (empty Buffer, empty string, 64 bytes) and 4 option objects: this PR is equal to Node.js v26.3.0 + fa4af16414 in 12 of 12 rows, main in 4 of 12 (the 64-byte rows).Measurements (release builds of the merge base 9f70da0 with and without this diff, linux x64):
A hex or base64 string gets no pledge, and its copy is not used: 60.3 cells per call, one more than a call with an explicit pledge. That call failed on main.
A 64-byte input, CPU per call and peak RSS (200 calls per run. The last cell is the median of 6 runs of 20 calls, 33 to 36 ms):
"a".repeat(64),defaultEncoding: "latin1""a".repeat(64),defaultEncoding: "UTF8"pledgedSrcSize: nullpledgedSrcSize: nullpledgedSrcSize: nullpledgedSrcSize: nullThe host had a load average above 400, and one more run of the last cell with 40 calls gave 64 ms. The two binaries differ by 4 MiB of
RssFilebeforenode:zlibloads (29 MiB and 25 MiB,RssAnonequal), so 3 to 4 MiB of each RSS delta is not from this diff. Without a pledge, zstd sizes its tables and the window for a stream of unknown size: the frame declares a window of 2 MiB at level 3, 8 MiB at level 19 and 128 MiB at level 22. That is what each released Node.js does for everyzstdCompress()call, and whatcreateZstdCompress()does in Bun.With the string rule of Node.js and no difference, the latin1 call of the first row took 30 ms and 743 MiB at level 22 (a build of the plain port). Bun pledged for it before.
Upstream tests. The new block of
test/parallel/test-zlib-zstd-pledged-src-size.jsin fa4af16414 passes with this PR and fails on main (the async output for""is not equal to the sync output). The full file of fa4af16414 fails with this PR at its line 42, which needs the pledge check of #44278. Sotest/js/node/test/parallel/test-zlib-zstd-pledged-src-size.jsstays the v26.3.0 copy, and this PR adds no passing upstream file. The design with one write. The write of the input can also end the frame (
ZSTD_e_end), as inzstdCompressSync(). Then zstd infers the size, and the wrapper needs no pledge. I built and measured that first: one native write per call in place of two, and a content size for a string in each encoding. Its frames are not those of Node.js with fa4af16414. For example, a call whosefinishFlushdoes not end the frame gets no content size. So it is a change to propose to Node.js first.Review concerns that I rejected.
ZSTD_c_srcSizeHint) for the calls that stay without a pledge. The hint has to reach nativeinit, so it needs a hidden argument to theZstdconstructor or module state, and it is an experimental zstd parameter. Those calls are the hex and base64 strings, which failed before, and a pledge that is not a number.{ __proto__: null, ...opts }drops options that the object inherits (Bun's block did the same). The UTF-8 test is case-sensitive. A maintainer can forward them.decodeStrings: false. Bun throwsERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPEfor a string there, with and without this PR. Node.js v26.3.0 and v26.10.0 abort (Assertion failed: Buffer::HasInstance(args[1])). zlib: fix abort with decodeStrings: false nodejs/node#66359 changes that on main. Not in this PR.
zstdCompressSync()byte for byte, except when the input is an exact multiple of 131072 bytes from 262144: the async frame then ends with one empty block, 3 bytes more. Atransformoption that changes the byte count fails withZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong. Both are the same on main and on Node.js + fa4af16414.Tests. The new file uses
node:testandnode:assert, and its last test runs the same file under Node.js.
