This is the first release of Origins. Origins is genealogy software that stores a
family tree as text files in a git repository. Each person, family, place, source and
hypothesis is a Markdown file with YAML frontmatter.

To install it, follow Install on
the site. Getting started
shows you how to make a first corpus. You can try the pages without installing anything
in the demo.

This release has:

  • The corpus format. People, families, places, sources, repositories, notes and
hypotheses are Markdown files with YAML frontmatter, one directory for each record.
  • origins init to start a corpus, check to look for contradictions in it, fmt to
rewrite it in canonical form, and todo to list the research still to do.
  • The commands that change a corpus: set, unset, add, remove, create,
rename, delete, merge and split. Origins records each change as a git
commit. You can read that history with log, whence, blame and why, and take
back the last change with undo.
  • origins adopt to record changes you made to the files with an editor.
  • Hypotheses. You can test one with check --with, and settle it with
    hypothesis accept or hypothesis reject.
  • Import from GEDCOM and from Gramps, with origins import gedcom and
    origins import gramps.
  • Export to GEDCOM 7.0, to charts in SVG, PDF and PNG, and to a folder of web pages,
    with origins export.
  • origins browse, which shows the corpus in a browser, where you can also change it.
  • origins mcp, which serves the corpus to an AI agent over the Model Context
Protocol. The agent can read the corpus and propose hypotheses.
  • Sharing a corpus through git remotes with remote, fetch, push, pull and
    clone.
  • Archives for Linux, macOS and Windows on amd64 and arm64, and a Docker image for
    linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 at ghcr.io/origins-project/origins.
