Do not require ObservedPhase.status until legacy writers are gone.
The Helm chart renders the new CRD and the object-controller Deployment together. The Deployment uses a rolling update with maxUnavailable: 0, so a legacy controller can remain active after the CRD schema changes. That controller preserves observedPhases entries without status and sends them through Status().Update. The new schema rejects the update, which leaves the existing ClusterObjectSet with stale status until the rollout completes.
Keep this field optional for this release and regenerate the shipped CRDs.

let's switch to Ready or AllObjectsReady to match the Ready condition verbiage

we might want to split this into InvalidSpecification and PreconditionsNotMet to match the Ready condition verbiage

Same here for TearingDown and TeardownComplete, in Ready we use Archiving and Archived. We should harmonize here - though I don't know in which direction we should go...we should talk about this as a group maybe

Currently, in Ready, Superseded gets set once any object has transitioned. We should also make a decision here. The issue at the revision/object set level is that we may not ever have all objects transitioned (some may not be present in the next revision)...

what do we think about Stabilizing instead? with a message like objects are in place, the controller is waiting for them to reach a steady/healthy state?

Description
