Summary

Hacktoberfest no longer counts pull requests, so searching for eligible repositories isn't needed anymore. This PR retires the project finder and replaces the whole site with a single static page. The page explains why the finder was retired and points visitors to hacktoberfest.com.

Keeping hosting usage near zero

  • Static only: the build output is one prerendered page plus a 404. There are no server functions, API routes, middleware, database or GitHub API calls.
  • Redirects for old routes: /repos, /repos/[language], /contributors, /reports and /api/* all redirect to the notice page via next.config.mjs. These are routing rules, so no function runs. The /github redirect stays.
  • No image optimization: images.unoptimized is set, so image transformations are no longer billed.
  • Analytics commented out: the Umami and Databuddy blocks are commented out in layout.tsx. Cloudinary is no longer used anywhere.
  • No secrets needed: env validation is dropped, so the build needs no environment variables. The database, GitHub OAuth and analytics secrets can be removed from Vercel.

Design (Hacktoberfest 2026 theme)

  • The 2026 Hacktoberfest logo, plus a matching favicon and Apple touch icon.
  • The palette is sampled from hacktoberfest.com: teal, dark teal, sage, coral, red, yellow and maroon offset shadows.
  • Sections follow the current site's patterns: condensed display headings, monospace coral buttons, cream cards, hexagon "sticker" icons, numbered badges and a pixel field.
  • Fonts are self-hosted from npm (Barlow Semi Condensed, Space Mono, Inter), so visitors make no third-party font requests.
  • The footer notes that this is an independent project, not affiliated with Hacktoberfest.

Retired code

  • All feature code (pages, API routes, auth, Drizzle DB, components) and the 2025 brand assets moved to archive/, which the build, TypeScript and Prettier ignore.
  • The README now opens with a discontinuation notice.

Testing

  • pnpm build passes with no environment variables, and every route is static (○).
  • pnpm lint passes, and so does prettier --check.
  • Ran the production server and checked that every old route returns a 307 to /, that /github returns a 308 to the repo, and that static assets return 200.
  • Took screenshots at desktop and mobile widths (390px): no horizontal scroll.

Hacktoberfest no longer counts pull requests, so searching for eligible
repositories is no longer needed. The whole site is now a single static
page explaining why and pointing visitors to hacktoberfest.com.

- Replace every page with a prerendered notice page (no server functions,
API routes, middleware, database or GitHub API calls).
- Redirect all old routes (/repos, /contributors, /reports, /api/*) to the
notice at the routing layer; keep the /github redirect.
- Disable image optimization so no image transformations are billed.
- Comment out the Umami and Databuddy analytics.
- Drop the env validation so the build needs no secrets.
- Move the retired feature code to archive/ (excluded from the build,
  type-checking and Prettier).
- Add a discontinuation notice to the README.

Match the current hacktoberfest.com design: teal and sage sections,
condensed display headings with coral/yellow/red accents, coral mono
buttons and cream cards with hard maroon offset shadows, hexagon
"sticker" icons, numbered yellow badges and a pixel field echoing the
Fest map.

- Add the Hacktoberfest 2026 logo and a matching favicon/apple icon.
- Self-host the fonts from npm (Barlow Semi Condensed, Space Mono,
Inter) so visitors make no third-party font requests.
- Replace the old theme tokens and unused Tailwind plugins with the 2026
  palette sampled from the site.
- Explain what changed (PRs no longer count) and point visitors to
hacktoberfest.com, with a "not affiliated" note in the footer.
- Move the 2025 brand assets and fonts to archive/.
- Fix the archive entry in .prettierignore.
