ServeHTTP reads every POST body with io.ReadAll before the Content-Type check or any authentication, so an unauthenticated client can make the server hold arbitrary memory: a 128 MiB text/plain POST allocated about 268 MiB here before being answered 400.

The body is now read up to a bound: DefaultMaxRequestBodyBytes (4 MiB), settable with WithMaxRequestBodyBytes; zero or less removes it. A body over the bound is answered 413 with a JSON-RPC INVALID_REQUEST error. The bound is on the bytes actually read (readBounded, an io.ReadAll that stops at the bound without allocating a reader per request), so a stale Content-Length from body-replacing middleware cannot bypass it; a Content-Length already over the bound is refused unread. Handle takes a body the caller has already read and bounds.

The default is the one policy choice: 4 MiB is well above a normal JSON-RPC message but refuses very large tool arguments. A larger default, or opt-in only, is a one-line change if you prefer.

Tests cover bodies under, at and over the bound, chunked bodies, the default and disabled bounds, an unreadable body, a stale Content-Length, and readBounded at its edges (limits 1 to MaxInt64, data with EOF, byte-at-a-time reads, never offering the reader more than the bound plus one byte).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Incoming HTTP requests are now limited to 4 MiB by default. You can configure a different limit or disable it.
    • Requests exceeding the configured limit receive an HTTP 413 response with a JSON-RPC invalid-request error.
    • Oversized requests are detected for both fixed-length and chunked bodies, including when the declared content length is missing or inaccurate.
    • Other body-reading errors continue to receive a parse-error response.

Tracking issue

Closes #1107.

Walkthrough

The Streamable HTTP server now limits POST request bodies by default, allows configuration or disabling of the limit, and returns HTTP 413 with a JSON-RPC invalid-request error when a body exceeds the limit.

Changes

Streamable HTTP Body Limit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure the request body limit
server/streamable_http.go
The server defaults to a 4 MiB POST body limit. WithMaxRequestBodyBytes changes or disables the limit.
Detect and report oversized bodies
server/streamable_http.go, server/jsonrpc_error.go
The handler checks declared body length and uses readBounded to detect overflow. Oversized requests receive HTTP 413 and a JSON-RPC invalid-request error.
Validate body limits and bounded reads
server/streamable_http_body_limit_test.go
Tests cover configured, default, and disabled limits, oversized bodies, inaccurate Content-Length values, and bounded-reader edge cases.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 15889

The body-limit change has no established merge-blocking defect. A direct test of unread rejection would strengthen regression coverage.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 15889

The change improves memory containment for incoming POST requests without expanding access or privileges. The main integration consideration is that requests larger than 4 MiB are now rejected by default. Protection remains caller-owned for direct framework integrations.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed control contains per-request body buffering for POST traffic reaching ServeHTTP on each configured server instance. It does not establish a process-wide memory budget or a concurrent-request limit.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The pre-existing attack path was attacker-supplied POST content reaching unbounded buffering before content-type validation and POST processing. The new default limits that path, including chunked bodies and bodies larger than their declared Content-Length; the inspected comparison does not establish a newly introduced bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new option explicitly protects ServeHTTP, not direct Handle calls. Handle already accepts a fully buffered byte slice and dispatches it without this size check. Body-consumption limits therefore remain the adapter caller's responsibility; that entrypoint is unchanged by the PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The added admission path uses request-local buffering and returns on overflow or read failure before application dispatch. Repeated or concurrent rejected requests do not acquire new session ownership through this path, and response-encoding failure is logged without continuing into POST processing.

Make the unreadable-body case verify an unread body.

The current case sends readable bytes through httptest.NewServer. It can return 413 even if ServeHTTP reads the body before rejecting it. Use an erroring reader and call ServeHTTP directly. Assert that the reader receives no Read call and that the response is 413.

ServeHTTP read every POST body with io.ReadAll before any check, so a
client could make the server hold arbitrary memory. The body is now read
up to a bound, 4 MiB by default (WithMaxRequestBodyBytes); a larger one
is answered 413. Content-Length is not trusted, except that one over the
bound is refused unread.

Assert that an oversized declared body remains unread.

The current test checks only the 413 response. That assertion also passes if ServeHTTP reads the body before rejecting it. Add a direct ServeHTTP test with a counting reader, set ContentLength above the limit, and assert zero reads.

The configurable 4 MiB default looks reasonable. Please add user-facing docs/release notes covering the new default, how to raise or disable it (zero/negative), and that direct Handle callers must bound reads themselves.

Please strengthen the oversized Content-Length regression with a counting or fail-on-read body, asserting zero reads before the 413 response.

@pbednarcik Thanks for this PR — the body-size bound looks like a solid fix. The only thing blocking it right now is that it has merge conflicts with the base branch, so could you rebase (or merge main) and push an update? CI is otherwise passing.
