Description

ParseCallToolResult now accepts tool results that only include structuredContent, or that use resultType: input_required without content, matching CallToolResult.UnmarshalJSON and the structured-only case in tools_test.go.

JSON null for structuredContent is treated as missing (probe decodes it as any, not raw JSON length). Results with no content, no structured payload, and no input-required type still return content is missing.

Overlaps in spirit with #994 (client interop); this PR stays focused on ParseCallToolResult and unit tests.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)

Checklist

  • My code follows the code style of this project
  • I have performed a self-review of my own code
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works

Test plan

  • go test ./mcp/ -race -run TestParseCallToolResult

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Tool responses without content are now accepted when they include structured data or indicate that user input is required. Structured data and input request details are preserved, with an empty content list where applicable.
    • Responses still return an error when content and the supported alternatives are absent, or when structured data is null.

Tracking issue

Closes #1111.

Walkthrough

ParseCallToolResult accepts responses without content when structuredContent is non-null or resultType is input_required. Otherwise, it returns the existing content is missing error.

Changes

Tool result parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Content field handling
mcp/utils.go, mcp/utils_additional_test.go
The parser checks structuredContent when content is absent. Tests confirm that null structuredContent returns the missing-content error and non-null structuredContent is retained while Content remains empty.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~8 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: po-et, serhiizghama

Merge Risk: Low · up to 5aaaf

Add coverage for explicitly complete structured-only results; the implementation itself otherwise matches the intended parsing behavior.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to b62c9

The parser accepts additional response shapes without adding authority. A server could already reach the same configured host handlers and retry flow by supplying an empty content array. The reviewed decoding and execution controls remain unchanged.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Within the inspected path, server-supplied input_required responses can invoke configured elicitation, sampling, and roots handlers on the calling client. Omitting content does not expand that authority: an equivalent response containing an empty content array already reached those handlers before this PR.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The newly accepted omitted-content shape does not establish a new attack path in the reviewed client. A server could previously obtain the same decoding and pending-state behavior by adding content:[]; therefore existing handler side effects and bounded malformed-input retries are not attributed to this PR as new concerns.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Host-handler dispatch rejects missing handlers, missing parameters, unsupported methods, and nil results. Retries retain the original tool request and header selection, overlaying only multi-round-trip responses and opaque state. Each send uses the existing client transport and allocates a fresh request ID.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The documented input_required contract requires input requests or request state, but decoding does not enforce that presence rule. Such malformed results enter bounded empty-input retries. This was already possible with content:[] and is an existing contract-enforcement limitation, not a newly introduced failure-containment weakness.

Use the required table-driven form for the added cases.

AGENTS.md:18 requires table-driven tests with tests := []struct{ name, ... }. These cases use direct t.Run calls. The guidance defines no exception.

Cover explicit resultType: "complete"

ResultTypeComplete is a supported final-result shape. The current test omits resultType, so it would not detect a regression that rejects structured-only results when resultType is explicitly "complete". Add a second case while preserving the existing omitted-field coverage.
