ToolArgumentsSchema has fields for type, properties, required, additionalProperties and $defs, and decoding a schema dropped every other top-level keyword. A tool listed from a server and passed on, as gateways and proxies do, lost its $schema, $id, title, description, oneOf and the like. The spec has schemas validated according to their declared dialect (SEP-1613), which a copy without $schema no longer declares. Add AdditionalFields, which UnmarshalJSON fills with those keywords and MarshalJSON writes back; the existing fields, when set, take precedence over entries with the same name. Refs into draft-07 "definitions" are rewritten in the kept keywords too when "definitions" becomes "$defs", and a schema that declares draft-04 or earlier gets no empty "required", which those drafts don't allow. Schemas built from Go types or with NewTool are unchanged.

Decode and encode schema keywords mcp/tools.go |
ToolArgumentsSchema stores and re-emits unmodeled keywords. Modeled fields take precedence. Decoding conditionally adopts legacy definitions, rewrites references in schema positions, and decodes additional-keyword numbers as json.Number. Empty required arrays are omitted for draft-03 and draft-04. |
Test keyword preservation and dialect handling mcp/tool_schema_keywords_test.go, mcp/tools_schema_additional_fields_test.go |
Tests cover schema and Tool round trips, field precedence, additional-field decoding, definitions retention, reference handling, and draft-04 serialization. |
Validate round-trip schemas mcp/tool_schema_roundtrip_regression_test.go |
Tests compare schema structure and validation before and after round trips. They cover declared and unknown dialects, both definition containers, schema-position reference handling, and numeric precision. |

Merge Risk:

No actionable merge-blocking issue remains in the reviewed changes; normal checks can proceed.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to df6ab

The change improves schema fidelity without establishing a new privileged operation or confirmed security regression. Residual uncertainty concerns downstream validator behavior and handling of partially decoded schemas after errors.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The supported affected scope is structured tool schemas passing through this serializer, their relaying clients, and server-side validation consumers. The reviewed change does not establish expanded transport, credential, or tool-execution authority; deployment-wide exposure outside these consumers remains unmeasured.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Input and output validation already treat schema compilation errors as validation not run. This pre-existing fail-open policy remains relevant to schema compatibility, but the comparison does not establish that this PR introduces or materially expands a bypass.
- inferred — Preserved $schema, $id, and external reference values are not newly introduced authority: additional metadata already crossed the serializer in the base. Registering an in-memory root alone does not prove that dependency-level external resource loading is prohibited; that behavior remains unverified.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The changed decoder populates AdditionalFields before later type, properties, or legacy-definition errors can occur. Failed decoding is therefore not transactional for that field. No security-relevant caller consuming such failed receiver state was established, and partial modeled-field mutation predates the PR.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Applications treating schema validation as a security boundary could reject uncompileable schemas at registration or explicitly surface validation-not-run outcomes, rather than relying on the existing silent fallback.

Explanation
The description clearly explains the bug, the fix, scope limits, tests, validation results, and tracking issue. It includes the relevant type and checklist selections. The optional MCP Spec Compliance section is omitted, which is acceptable because the change is presented as a bug fix rather than a new specification implementation.

Explanation
Direct issue
#1113requires preservation of declared dialects, both definition containers, valid references, additional-keyword number precision, legacy normalization only for undeclared schemas without competing $defs, omission of invalid empty required arrays for draft-03/04, and coverage for input and output schemas.mcp/tools.goimplements these rules. It decodes additional keywords withjson.Numberand limits reference rewriting to schema-bearing keywords. The regression tests cover draft-07, 2020-12, unknown dialects, both containers, legacy normalization, numeric values, draft-04, and input/output round-trips. The tests also preserve example and vendor data.

In @mcp/tools.go:
- Line 1008: Update the `json.Unmarshal` call that decodes additional schema
keywords into `value` to preserve numeric precision, using a decoder with
`UseNumber` or retaining the raw JSON so large integers remain unchanged when
re-encoded.
- Line 975: Update the schema normalization around rewriteDraft07LocalRefs so
schemas retaining a draft-07 $schema keep definitions and their references
instead of moving them to $defs; only use $defs when the schema is migrated to a
dialect that supports it.
- Line 975: Update rewriteDraft07LocalRefs when called with tis.AdditionalFields
to recurse only through known schema-valued keywords such as oneOf; leave
data-valued keywords such as examples and vendor keywords unchanged while
rewriting schema references.

Preserve JSON numbers in additional keywords.
If an incoming schema contains "const": 9007199254740993, unmarshaling the value into any stores the number as float64. Re-encoding can then emit 9007199254740992, changing the constraint. Decode preserved values with json.Decoder.UseNumber or retain their raw JSON. Go documents the float64 default and the UseNumber alternative. (pkg.go.dev)

Description
Round-tripping a tool schema can change which arguments it accepts. A draft-07 schema using an ID inside
definitionsloses its reference target when that container is renamed to$defs; schemas using both containers losedefinitionsaltogether. Additional-keyword constraints also decode through float64, so9007199254740993becomes9007199254740992, and1e400fails to decode.Preserve definition containers and references for declared dialects, including unknown dialects, and keep both containers when present. Retain the legacy definitions-to-$defs normalization only for undeclared schemas without a competing
$defs. Decode additional-keyword values withjson.Number, and omit an emptyrequiredfor draft-03/04 schemas where it is invalid. This applies to tool input and output schemas. Existing numeric decoding in modeled fields such aspropertiesand$defsis outside this fix.Type of Change
