Fixes #12555

Problem

When the expect filter checked multiple conditions and a log failed more than one, only the first condition was checked and logged. Subsequent rules were never evaluated because the function returned FLB_FALSE immediately after the first failure.

Solution

Changed the function to use a flag instead of early returns. Now all rules are evaluated, and failures are collected and logged before returning the final result. This ensures all violated conditions are reported to the user.

Changes

  • Modified
  • Changed return logic from immediate to setting and continuing
  • Added proper cleanup (flb_free, flb_ra_key_value_destroy) before continue statements

This is a minimal fix that preserves existing behavior while ensuring all rules are checked.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Configured expectation rules now continue to be evaluated after a mismatch, and any failed rule causes the overall result to fail.

The rule_apply function was returning FLB_FALSE immediately when the
first rule failed, preventing subsequent rules from being evaluated.
This caused the expect filter to only report one failed condition per
log record even when multiple conditions were violated.

Changed to use a 'failed' flag that tracks whether any rule failed,
allowing all rules to be checked and all failures to be logged before
returning the final result.

Fixes fluent#12555

📝 Walkthrough

The expect filter’s rule_apply function now continues evaluating configured rules after a mismatch. It records failures and returns false if any rule fails.

Changes: Expect filter rule evaluation

rule_apply records failed checks and continues evaluating later rules. It returns the accumulated result after the rule loop.

P1 Badge Remove NULL destruction from missing-key branches

When a record lacks a field referenced by key_exists, val is NULL by construction at this call, but flb_ra_key_value_destroy() immediately reads v->type; this therefore crashes Fluent Bit instead of recording the failed rule and evaluating the rest. The identical newly added cleanup in the missing-key_val_eq path has the same problem, so neither NULL path should call the destructor.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Fix the inverted failed flag. The filter now reports the wrong result.

failed starts as FLB_TRUE. Each failed rule sets it to FLB_FALSE. rule_apply returns failed, and callers treat FLB_TRUE as "rules match".

Consequences:

  • If all rules pass, rule_apply returns FLB_TRUE. This is correct only by accident of the naming.
  • If any rule fails, rule_apply returns FLB_FALSE. This is also correct.

The logic works, but the name failed says the opposite of what it stores. The name will cause future bugs. Rename the variable to matched and keep the same values.

Proposed fix
-    int failed = FLB_TRUE;
+    int matched = FLB_TRUE;
 ...
-            failed = FLB_FALSE;
+            matched = FLB_FALSE;
 ...
-    return failed;
+    return matched;

Apply the rename at every assignment in the function.

Remove the NULL destroy calls.

Both branches call flb_ra_key_value_destroy(val) after val is known to be NULL. The function dereferences v->type without a NULL check, so these calls can crash.

Suggested fix
             failed = FLB_FALSE;
             n++;
-            flb_ra_key_value_destroy(val);
             continue;

Apply the same removal in the key_exists missing-key branch.
