VS Code's MCP docs now lead with the portable Copilot configuration (
~/.copilot/mcp-config.jsonor a workspace-root.mcp.json, both with a top-levelmcpServersobject) and label.vscode/mcp.jsonand the profilemcp.jsondeprecated. Copilot harness sessions read the portable files directly and do not receive servers that need${input:...}variables.The VS Code section of the GitHub Copilot quickstart now:
~/.copilot/mcp-config.json(or.mcp.jsonfor a team) withmcpServers, via MCP: Add Server and Copilot Global, and notes the olderserversfiles still work for compatibility;copilot mcp add --header, since portable files don't support input variables;.vscode/mcp.jsoninput-variable example for the Local harness, with a note that such servers are not forwarded to Copilot harness sessions.Sources: https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/agent-customization/mcp-servers and https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/agents/reference/mcp-configuration
Found by Wildfire, Firecrawl's integration testing: the config-shape check was warning against VS Code's MCP docs.
