🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Match each ruby annotation through its own closing boundary. Both patterns stop an outer <rtc> at a nested </rt>, so text later in the rtc becomes spoken text.

Traced the regex past the included tests. The main paths hold up: multiple <rt> per <ruby>, attributes (<rt class='x'>), uppercase tags, <rtc>, and the implicit close at </ruby> all strip correctly, and mirroring the Python and JS patterns 1:1 is the right call given the keep the two in step comment on _SRT_MARKUP_RE.
Two things I'd want addressed or at least acknowledged:
-
<rp>fallback parens survive. The common real-world ruby pattern is<ruby>read<rp>(</rp><rt>reed</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>, and with this change that cue extracts asPlease read() once.— the<rt>content is gone, but the literal parens from<rp>remain and reach the engine as speech. HTML-authored captions use rp a lot, so I'd strip<rp>...</rp>alongside rt/rtc, or at least pin the current behavior in a test. -
The
$fallback for an unclosed<rt>consumes to the end of the cue. I checkedLine one\n<rt>note\nLine two still speech— it extracts as justLine one; everything after the stray<rt>vanishes. It's bounded per cue (parse_srtcallsspoken_cue_textper cue at srt_parser.py:174, not on the whole file), and spec-wise an rt does run to cue end, so it's defensible — but in a malformed caption this silently discards the remaining dialogue lines. Ending the unclosed fallback at the next newline instead of$would keep every test in this PR green while limiting the damage.
Minor: in the SubRip path the annotation strip runs before _SRT_MARKUP_RE, which is deliberately conservative about < being dialogue (a<b and c>d is speech there). A literal <rt 5> in dialogue now gets eaten as an annotation opener. Very unlikely input; just flagging that this narrows the SRT "tags must be exact shapes" rule.

In compact caption files with no blank lines between cues, an unfinished annotation such as <ruby>read<rt>reed makes Electron discard later cues too. parseSrt joins their dialogue before RUBY_ANNOTATION runs, so its $ fallback removes everything after <rt>, including the next cue's words. Flush each cue at its timing boundary before stripping annotations.

Fixes #2833
When importing WebVTT and SubRip cues containing ruby markup (
<ruby>base<rt>pronunciation</rt></ruby>), both the base text and the ruby annotation were preserved during plain-text extraction, causing the pronunciation guide to be duplicated into the spoken transcript.Stripped
<rt>and<rtc>annotations before tag removal in both the backend parser (spoken_cue_text) and the Electron story import helper, and added regression tests covering WebVTT and SubRip ruby cues.Ruby
<rt>and<rtc>annotations are removed before tag stripping in backend and Electron caption imports, while base text remains. This prevents pronunciation guides from appearing as spoken dialogue in WebVTT and SubRip imports. Human review should check malformed or nested ruby markup, because the removal pattern uses closing tags and cue boundaries to determine what content to discard.
