Description

Under React 19.2 <Activity>, hiding a flow runs its effect cleanups, so useMachine stopped its actor. Showing it again started the actor from the initial state. That dropped progress (for example the phone section's code step) and lost invoke results that settled while hidden.

Machine actors now resume after stop() / start(), following XState's stopRootWithRehydration model:

  • A start() after stop() resumes in the current state. Entry actions and invokes are not run again. The first start() is unchanged.
  • after timers are paused on stop and re-armed on start.
  • Invoke results and events that arrive while stopped are queued and applied in arrival order on start.
  • useMachine subscribes with useSyncExternalStore before its start effect, so the resumed snapshot renders. React does not re-read the store when an Activity is shown again. @xstate/react's useActor uses the same order.
  • onDone fires once per actor.

One deliberate difference from XState: an invoke still in flight at stop is not re-run on start (XState aborts and restarts fromPromise). Our src functions are Clerk calls with side effects and no abort signal, so the original promise's result is kept.

Also adds a concurrency-react-19 Vitest project that runs *.concurrency.feature.test.tsx specs against react@19.2.8.

Under React 19 Activity, hiding a flow stopped its actor and showing it again reset it to the initial state. Actors now resume in their current state: after timers are paused and re-armed, and invoke results and events that arrive while stopped are applied in order on start. useMachine subscribes before starting so the resumed snapshot renders.

📝 Walkthrough

Actor stop-and-restart behavior now preserves state and handles paused timers, queued events, and invoke settlements. Tests cover machine behavior and React Activity visibility changes in machine, form, and profile components. The test configuration adds a React 19 browser project for concurrency tests.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f5036

The actor resume fix looks sound. The new React 19 Activity tests are not run in CI, and one phone-section test check can miss a duplicate request, so the regression coverage is weaker than intended. Wire the project into CI and fix the assertion before relying on that coverage.

Wait for request handling before asserting the count.

holdRequests adds requests when the MSW handler receives them. The current synchronous assertion can run before a duplicate request reaches that handler. Moving the assertion after verify(actor) improves the ordering, but verify(actor) does not await prepare.requests. Use waitFor after verification.

The package scripts and CI command select only the feature project. The feature project includes src/**/*.feature.test.tsx, which also matches every *.concurrency.feature.test.tsx file. No inspected script or workflow selects concurrency-react-19. Therefore, the concurrency specs run under the catalog React version and are not executed with React 19.2.8 in CI.
