Slash is offered under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, with the additional terms in Section 2 about commercial use and the Slash name. Section 1 is a plain-English note. Section 2 is the license.
Hi, I'm Astrit, and I make Slash.
You're welcome here. Use Slash in your personal projects, side projects, experiments, coursework and open-source work at no cost. Read the code, take it apart, change it and learn from it. Bug reports, fixes and pull requests are always appreciated, big or small.
Why this license. I want developers to be able to use, try and improve Slash freely when they aren't making money from it. I also need to keep Slash sustainable. That means two things:
- Companies and individuals can't take Slash, clone it, white-label it or resell it for profit without a commercial license.
- The name "Slash" and its logos stay with me, so people always know what the official Slash is. If you fork it, give your fork its own name.
Using Slash commercially. If Slash is going into a product or service that makes money (a paid app, a SaaS product, client work, an internal tool at a for-profit company), you need a commercial license. That's easy to arrange. Email legal@slash.tools with:
- who you are and the company you work for,
- what you're building and where Slash fits in,
- roughly how many people or sites will use it.
I'll get back to you with terms. If you aren't sure whether your use counts as commercial, ask. I'd rather answer a question than have you guess.
Thanks for being here.
Astrit
This note explains the intent behind the license. If it ever seems to differ from Section 2, Section 2 is what applies.
- Noncommercial grant. You may use, copy, modify, distribute and contribute to the software for any noncommercial purpose, as set out in the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 (Section 2.4).
- Commercial restriction. Commercial use needs a separate, paid commercial license from the licensor (Section 2.2).
- Trademarks. This license grants no rights to the Slash name, logos or branding (Section 2.3).
- No warranty, no liability. The software comes as is (Section 2.4, "No Liability", and Section 2.5).
The PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 allows use only for permitted purposes. For clarity, none of the following is a permitted purpose, and each needs a separate commercial license from the licensor:
- (a) using the software, or any change or new work based on it, in or with a product, service, website or application that is sold, licensed for a fee, supported by advertising or subscriptions, or otherwise run to generate revenue;
- (b) offering the software, or any change or new work based on it, as part of a paid service, including hosted, managed, consulting or client services;
- (c) selling, sublicensing, renting or otherwise distributing the software, or any change or new work based on it, for a fee or other commercial advantage;
- (d) white-labeling or rebranding the software, or presenting it as your own product, for a commercial purpose; and
- (e) use by or on behalf of a for-profit company, other than use allowed under "Personal Uses" in Section 2.4.
To ask for a commercial license, email legal@slash.tools. A commercial license is valid only when given in writing by the licensor.
"Slash", the Slash logos, and the names, icons and branding of Slash products (together, the "Slash Marks") belong to the licensor. All rights in the Slash Marks are reserved. This license does not grant any right to use them.
- (a) If you distribute a changed version or a fork of the software, you must give it a name and branding that are not the Slash Marks and are not confusingly similar to them.
- (b) You must not use the Slash Marks in a way that suggests your version, product or service is official, or is made, endorsed, sponsored or supported by the licensor.
- (c) You may use the name "Slash" only in plain text and only to say truthfully where your work comes from, for example "based on Slash". You must keep the Required Notice above.
The text below is the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, unchanged. The licensor is Astrit, and the software is Slash, including every package and file in this repository.

In order to get any license under these terms, you must agree to them as both strict obligations and conditions to all your licenses.
The licensor grants you a copyright license for the software to do everything you might do with the software that would otherwise infringe the licensor's copyright in it for any permitted purpose. However, you may only distribute the software according to Distribution License and make changes or new works based on the software according to Changes and New Works License.
The licensor grants you an additional copyright license to distribute copies of the software. Your license to distribute covers distributing the software with changes and new works permitted by Changes and New Works License.
You must ensure that anyone who gets a copy of any part of the software from you also gets a copy of these terms or the URL for them above, as well as copies of any plain-text lines beginning with Required Notice: that the licensor provided with the software. For example:
Required Notice: Copyright Yoyodyne, Inc. (http://example.com)
The licensor grants you an additional copyright license to make changes and new works based on the software for any permitted purpose.
The licensor grants you a patent license for the software that covers patent claims the licensor can license, or becomes able to license, that you would infringe by using the software.
Any noncommercial purpose is a permitted purpose.
Personal use for research, experiment, and testing for the benefit of public knowledge, personal study, private entertainment, hobby projects, amateur pursuits, or religious observance, without any anticipated commercial application, is use for a permitted purpose.
Use by any charitable organization, educational institution, public research organization, public safety or health organization, environmental protection organization, or government institution is use for a permitted purpose regardless of the source of funding or obligations resulting from the funding.
You may have "fair use" rights for the software under the law. These terms do not limit them.
These terms do not allow you to sublicense or transfer any of your licenses to anyone else, or prevent the licensor from granting licenses to anyone else. These terms do not imply any other licenses.
If you make any written claim that the software infringes or contributes to infringement of any patent, your patent license for the software granted under these terms ends immediately. If your company makes such a claim, your patent license ends immediately for work on behalf of your company.
The first time you are notified in writing that you have violated any of these terms, or done anything with the software not covered by your licenses, your licenses can nonetheless continue if you come into full compliance with these terms, and take practical steps to correct past violations, within 32 days of receiving notice. Otherwise, all your licenses end immediately.
As far as the law allows, the software comes as is, without any warranty or condition, and the licensor will not be liable to you for any damages arising out of these terms or the use or nature of the software, under any kind of legal claim.
The licensor is the individual or entity offering these terms, and the software is the software the licensor makes available under these terms.
You refers to the individual or entity agreeing to these terms.
Your company is any legal entity, sole proprietorship, or other kind of organization that you work for, plus all organizations that have control over, are under the control of, or are under common control with that organization. Control means ownership of substantially all the assets of an entity, or the power to direct its management and policies by vote, contract, or otherwise. Control can be direct or indirect.
Your licenses are all the licenses granted to you for the software under these terms.
Use means anything you do with the software requiring one of your licenses.
- (a) Sections 2.2 and 2.3 add to the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0; they do not take away any right you have under its "Fair Use" section or under the law.
- (b) As far as the law allows, the licensor gives no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, and is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or any loss of data, profit or revenue, arising from the software or this license.
- (c) When you submit a contribution to this repository (for example, a pull request), you confirm you have the right to submit it, and you grant the licensor a perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to use, copy, change, distribute and sublicense it under any terms, including commercial licenses. You keep the copyright in your contribution.
