Historically, tokens for Kubernetes service accounts had to be read from dedicated Kubernetes secrets. They had no automatic expiration. Since Kubernetes 1.24, such secrets are not automatically created anymore, they have to be created explicitly.

Instead, the 'official' way to get a service account token is to use a projected volume. This asks the kubelet to request a fresh token from the control plane, and placing it inside the pod ready for consumption. These tokens automatically expire, and are rotated accordingly.

This PR keeps the automountServiceAcccountToken:false setting.

See the pull request guide for details on each item.

Fixes #10340

Motivation

I'm trying to use HTTP steps without resorting to outdated security mechanisms.

Modifications

The created agent pods use a projected service account token unless there is a dedicated mount already.

Verification

Ran a workflow without creating the service account token with the HTTP plugin:

Workflow
apiVersion: argoproj.io/v1alpha1
kind: Workflow
metadata:
  generateName: httpwaiter-
spec:
  entrypoint: main
  templates:
    - name: main
      steps:
        - - name: getip1
            template: getip
        - - name: waiter
            template: wait
        - - name: getip2
            template: getip
    - name: getip
      http:
        url: https://icanhazip.com
    - name: wait
      container:
        name: main
        image: busybox:latest
        command:
          - /bin/sleep
        args:
          - "7200"
{EA32CAB0-1FAC-445F-A8E5-F0925E9C431F}

Since the waiter step in-between took 7200s to complete, it also demonstrated the automatic rotation of service account tokens.

Documentation

This change removes undocumented behaviour and restores it to the expected behavior. No documentation change needed.

AI

Claude Code was used to understand the code and draft part of the edits.

Agent pods now use projected Kubernetes API access volumes when their ServiceAccount has no legacy token secret or configured token annotation. Unit and end-to-end tests cover this behavior.

Changes: Agent token volume

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select and validate the agent token volume
workflow/controller/serviceaccount.go, workflow/controller/agent.go, workflow/controller/agent_test.go, test/e2e/testdata/agent-no-token-secret-rbac.yaml, test/e2e/agent_test.go
The new helper uses the existing secret-backed volume path when a ServiceAccount has a token secret or configured token annotation. Otherwise, it creates a projected volume with a service-account token, cluster CA, and namespace. Agent pod creation uses the helper. Unit and end-to-end tests cover the no-token-secret case.

HTTP workflows now run under service accounts that have no token secret, which addresses the Kubernetes 1.24+ failure. One case is still unhandled: a service account that references only ordinary, non-token secrets gets one of those secrets mounted as its credential. Its agent pod can then fail to reach the Kubernetes API. The same case already failed before this change, so the risk is bounded, but tightening the selection check would complete the fix.

Explanation

The description includes the required motivation, modifications, verification, documentation rationale, issue reference, checklist, and AI disclosure. It does not report running make pre-commit -B, but the description is otherwise substantially complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy issue #10340. createAgentPod now calls getAgentTokenVolume. For a ServiceAccount without legacy token secrets or a token annotation, this function creates a projected service account token volume with CA and namespace projections. The pod keeps AutomountServiceAccountToken: false. The controller unit test checks this behavior, and the e2e test runs an HTTP workflow with a ServiceAccount that has no token secret.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed implementation is limited to agent-pod token selection for the linked HTTP workflow problem. The added unit test, e2e test, and RBAC fixture verify the required behavior. Existing secret-backed handling remains available for ServiceAccounts with configured token credentials. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Select the legacy volume only for a usable token Secret.

account.Secrets can contain ordinary Secret references. The current condition sends every such ServiceAccount to getServiceAccountTokenVolume, and TokenNameForServiceAccount returns account.Secrets[0].Name without checking its type or token data. The agent can then mount a Secret without service-account credentials and fail to authenticate.

Before selecting the legacy volume, confirm that the selected Secret is a usable service-account token Secret. Otherwise, use the projected volume. Preserve the explicit annotation path only when it identifies a usable token Secret. Do not use only a non-empty getServiceAccountTokenName result as the check because the helper also returns a fallback name.

…rgoproj#10340)

Historically, tokens for Kubernetes service accounts had to be read from
dedicated Kubernetes secrets. They had no automatic expiration. Since
Kubernetes 1.24, such secrets are not automatically created anymore,
they have to be created explicitly.

Instead, the 'official' way to get a service account token is to use a
`projected` volume. This asks the `kubelet` to request a fresh token
from the control plane, and placing it inside the pod ready for
consumption. These tokens automatically expire, and are rotated
accordingly.

Fixes argoproj#10340.

The compatibility shape looks right to me - falling back to getServiceAccountTokenVolume when the account still has Secrets or carries the annotation means anyone who deliberately provisioned a token secret keeps working, and only the 1.24-and-later case changes. Keeping automountServiceAccountToken: false and projecting explicitly is nicer than flipping automount on, too.

One question on scope. getServiceAccountTokenVolume has a second caller that this PR leaves alone:

// workflow/controller/agent.go:353
volume, volumeMount, err := woc.getServiceAccountTokenVolume(ctx, plug.Name+"-executor-plugin")

The same 1.24 deprecation applies to a <plugin>-executor-plugin service account, so plugin tokens still need a hand-made secret. Is leaving that for a follow-up deliberate? Fair enough if so - the plugin path has the AutomountServiceAccountToken switch and its own naming convention, so it isn't a copy-paste of this change.

Unrelated heads-up: I have #17225 open against createAgentPod as well (it applies templateDefaults to the agent pod). Different lines, but the same function, so one of us will need a rebase. Happy for it to be me whichever way round they land.
