  • Ran make pre-commit -B (not run locally: golangci-lint could not typecheck in my environment; gofmt clean)
  • Signed-off commits with Conventional Commit messages
  • PR title is a conventional commit message (it becomes the release notes entry)
  • Unit or e2e tests cover the change
  • For features: an associated issue and a feature description file (make feature-new) — n/a, bug fix
  • Opened as draft; will mark "Ready for review" once builds are green

Relates to #16638

Motivation

If the reconcile deadline (MAX_OPERATION_TIME) expires while re-entering a retry node after its child has already finished, the deadline error used to reach markNodeError and overwrite the Succeeded child with Error. With retryPolicy: OnFailure the retry parent then ended Error, and so did the workflow, although all pods succeeded (#16638).

Modifications

This PR now only adds a regression test, TestRetryNodeDeadlineExceededKeepsSucceededChild. Since I first wrote it, main picked up the shared DAG/Steps Engine refactor (#16290), and in the retry swap-back of handleRetries (workflow/controller/operator_template_execution.go) the deadline check already returns the unchanged retry node with the error instead of calling markNodeError. So there is no production code change left in this diff; the test pins that behaviour. Title and the earlier version of this description described a code change that is not in the diff — sorry for the confusion.

Verification

  • The test sweeps the reconcile deadline across a whole reconcile of a retried DAG with succeeded pods and asserts no node ends in phase Error. It passes on the current base (KUBECONFIG=/dev/null go test -count=3 -run TestRetryNodeDeadlineExceededKeepsSucceededChild ./workflow/controller/).
  • A reviewer reports it fails 5/5 when the deadline handling in the swap-back is removed; I have not re-run that myself against the current code.
  • Not run: make pre-commit -B/golangci-lint (typecheck failed on my local module cache), and no e2e against a live cluster.

Documentation

Not needed; test only.

AI

This PR was prepared with the assistance of an AI coding tool (Claude), including code, tests and description; I reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added coverage for retry behavior when a reconciliation deadline expires, verifying that successful child nodes remain successful and no node is incorrectly marked as an error.

This looks right to me. I pulled the branch and removed just the errors. Is(err, ErrDeadlineExceeded) block, keeping your test - it failed five times out of five, so the test really does pin the bug rather than passing by luck on the timing sweep.

One thing I noticed while I was in there. executeTemplate can also come back with ErrTimeout (from checkTemplateTimeouts) and ErrMaxDepthExceeded (operator.go:2253), and both still fall through to markNodeError(node.Name, err) on this same path. So a fulfilled child can still get overwritten with Error, just through a different error - same shape as the bug you're fixing.

The dag.go and steps.go call sites switch on the error instead: ErrTimeout becomes NodeFailed, and the depth and parallelism ones just continue. Would it be worth switching here too rather than special-casing the one sentinel? Totally fine if you'd rather keep this PR narrow and leave that for another one.

Assert the deadline-triggered workflow requeue.

This test calls operate directly and checks only node phases. Removing AddRateLimited would leave these assertions passing. No other inspected test covers this retry swap-back requeue path.

…ine in retry swap-back

Motivation: when a retry template's child node finishes and the reconcile
deadline (MAX_OPERATION_TIME) expires before the retry parent is re-entered,
executeTemplate returned ErrDeadlineExceeded from the swap-back re-entry and
the caller passed it to markNodeError. That overwrote the already Succeeded
child node with Error ("Deadline exceeded"). With retryPolicy OnFailure the
Error child is not retried, so the retry parent and workflow end Error even
though every pod succeeded. Every other ErrDeadlineExceeded site (dag.go,
steps.go, operator.go) bails out without touching node phase; this was the
one that did not.

Approach: return the unchanged node together with ErrDeadlineExceeded in the
swap-back block. The workflow has already been requeued by the deadline check.

Validation (run on macOS/arm64, no cluster):
- New TestRetryNodeDeadlineExceededKeepsSucceededChild sweeps the reconcile
deadline across a whole reconcile of a retried DAG whose pods succeeded.
Without the fix it fails (172 assertions of a node in phase Error); with the
  fix it passes (run -count=5).
- go test ./workflow/controller/ otherwise passes except the artifact-plugin
  tests (TestArtifactGCPodWithPlugins, TestBuildPluginSidecarsDedup,
  TestAddArtifactPluginsInitless_*, TestArtifactPluginSidecar), which fail
identically on the base commit in this environment.
- golangci-lint could not typecheck locally (incomplete module cache), so lint
was not run; gofmt is clean. No e2e run against a live cluster.

Make deadline expiration deterministic in this test.

The completed-DAG fixture and NodeError assertion can detect the regression only if the retry swap-back path runs. The wall-clock sweep does not guarantee that. It can miss the narrow deadline window, and the test has no assertion or instrumentation for ErrDeadlineExceeded or branch entry. Use a test clock or expire the deadline after a fixed number of checkDeadline calls.

14159-14219: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Make the deadline trigger deterministic.

handleRetries checks the deadline only after next makes the retry child fulfilled. The test samples deadlines from a different reconcile duration, so no sample is guaranteed to fall between child fulfillment and retry re-entry. The old error-marking path can therefore remain untested while the sweep passes.

Use a deterministic callback or focused handleRetries test that expires the deadline after the child becomes Succeeded, then assert ErrDeadlineExceeded, a non-Error retry parent, and the child’s Succeeded phase. The zero-step guard prevents an infinite loop, but it does not guarantee coverage of the affected interval.
