Thanks for the report! This error has a few different known causes, so we need a bit more detail to tell which one you're hitting:
Version and platform: the exact output of opencode --version, your operating system, and how you use OpenCode (terminal/CLI, Desktop app or web) and installed it.
Model: which free model you selected.
When it happens: on the very first message of a new session, or partway through (for example in a subagent or during compaction)?
Agents and config: are you using the built-in build/plan agent or a custom agent? Do you have any tools or permissions set to deny in your config?
A screenshot of the error, if you can.
You can reply here with the details, or edit the issue. If you edit it, please also leave a comment saying you've updated it so we know you're done.

I'm experiencing the same issue on Windows with OpenCode Desktop 2.0.29.
I was using the free-tier Muse Spark model when the error appeared in the middle of an existing conversation:
OpenCode's free tier can only be used from within OpenCode. Download it at https://opencode.ai and keep building.
I updated OpenCode Desktop from v1.19 to v2.0.29, but the error persists. The original conversation is still visible, and my project files are intact. I also made a backup of the project before troubleshooting.
The issue seems to affect the free-tier model even when using the official OpenCode Desktop application. Could this be related to authentication, provider configuration, or a regression in the free-tier access check?
Please let me know what diagnostic information would help identify the root cause. I would prefer not to lose the existing conversation or reset my configuration while troubleshooting.
If your OpenCode configuration has a provider: https://opencode.ai/zen/v1', then simply delete it from ".config\opencode\opencode.jsonc" and it should work. It's the change you made yesterday to fix the Opencode provider issues.

I'm experiencing the same issue on Windows using the official OpenCode CLI, version v2.0.32.
Error: OpenCode's free tier can only be used from within OpenCode. Download it at https://opencode.ai and keep building.
Troubleshooting already completed:
Upgraded OpenCode from v1.19.2 to v2.0.32.
Successfully authenticated through OpenCode Console device login.
Confirmed that OpenCode Console credentials are stored.
Tested multiple free models, including opencode/big-pickle and opencode/deepseek-v4.1-flash-free.
Checked the global configuration for a legacy zen/v1 provider override; none was found.
Checked relevant permission settings and environment variables.
The error persists.
The logs indicate that the request fails during model inference. Could you confirm whether this is a known Zen gateway or free-tier eligibility issue, and advise which diagnostic request ID or log fields are needed to investigate?
I would prefer to avoid deleting configuration, losing sessions, or switching to a paid plan.

We're closing this issue for now because we haven't heard back. This free-tier error has several known causes, and without your version (opencode --version), OS, which app you use (CLI, Desktop or web), the model and your agent/permission setup, we can't tell which one you're hitting.
If it still happens, please reply here with those details and we can reopen it, or open a new issue. You may also want to follow #55426, #55432 and #50366, which report the same error.

If your OpenCode configuration has a provider: https://opencode.ai/zen/v1', then simply delete it from ".config\opencode\opencode.jsonc" and it should work. It's the change you made yesterday to fix the Opencode provider issues.

@Tips-Discord Doesn't work for me. Even a fresh install doesn't help.
My config looks like:
{ "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json", "tools": { "read": true, "bash": true } }ghassenTn commentedon Oct 14, 2026
@tbreuss check this file .config/opencode/opencode.json

@ghassenTn For me, the solution that worked was this: #55443 (comment)
