Error: OpenCode's free tier can only be used from within OpenCode. Download it at https://opencode.ai and keep building. #55432
Thanks for the report! This error has a few different known causes on v2, so we need a bit more detail to work out which one you're hitting:
Your OS and how you installed OpenCode (npm @opencode/cli, install script, Homebrew, AUR, etc.). Please also paste the exact output of opencode --version.
When it happens: on the very first message of a new session, or partway through a session (for example during compaction)?
Which agent you're using: the built-in build/plan agent or a custom agent? Do you have any permission or tool settings in your config (global or project opencode.json, or .opencode/agents/*.md), especially rules that deny shell/bash, read or edit? If so, please paste them.
Login state: does opencode auth list show an opencode credential? Does the error go away after running opencode auth login opencode (or /connect)?
Other free models: do they fail the same way?
You can reply here with the details, or edit the issue. If you edit it, please also leave a comment saying you've updated it, so we know when you're done.
These existing issues may already cover your problem (ordered by likelihood):
Same error here on v2.0.32 (and v2.0.22), Windows 11, installed via npm i -g @opencode/cli.
Logged in: opencode auth list -> OpenCode Console / Personal / stored
Same error with Big Pickle, Nemotron 3.5 Super VL Free and DeepSeek V4 Flash Free
Same error with opencode run --standalone, from an empty directory, and with my opencode.jsonc (plugins + MCP) removed
The Console inference log shows my requests tied to my account, rejected with 403 (inference_failed) in ~40-120 ms, no tokens. A paid model call made by the client at the same time (GPT-6 Luna) shows 402.
Log line: "Failed to drain Session ... AI.Error.Authentication: OpenCode's free tier can only be used from within OpenCode"
Is there a server-side requirement for the free tier on accounts without billing/credits, or a known client regression in 2.0.x?
Closing this for now because we haven't heard back. This error has several different causes on v2, so we can't tell which one you're hitting without the details we asked for: your OS and install method, whether it happens on the first message, your agent and permission config, and your login state.
In the meantime, these issues cover the most common causes and may help:
