Connect custom inputs to mergedRef.
When input is a custom <input>, neither branch attaches mergedRef. The forwarded ref remains unset, and error cannot update custom validity. For type='date' or type='time', clicking the generated addon calls showPicker() through a null ref and throws. Use a ref-capable custom-input contract that preserves the input’s existing ref, and connect it in both branches.
