Description

I found that PerceptualLoss(spatial_dims=2, network_type="resnet50") normalizes three-channel inputs and targets in place. A forward call changes both caller-owned tensors, and a leaf input with requires_grad=True raises an in-place-operation error before the loss can be computed. The single-channel path avoids these effects because it repeats the channels first.

I changed torchvision_zscore_norm to return the normalized tensor without assigning to the caller's channel slices. The mean and standard deviation follow the input's dtype and device. I added tests for RGB and single-channel caller preservation, backpropagation to leaf inputs and targets, and unchanged normalization values for float32 and float64.

Evidence and testing

I reproduced this with the real ResNet50 branch, pretrained=False, and network access disabled; no weights were downloaded. For one forward call on deterministic tensors of shape (1, 3, 32, 32), I measured:

Caller tensor Maximum absolute change on dev Maximum absolute change after the fix
Input 2.117904 0
Target 1.612882 0

The figure compares sampled values from both caller-owned tensors before and after that call. The dashed line means unchanged values; nested markers expose the coincident channel values after the fix.

RGB caller tensor values before and after PerceptualLoss

I ran the six new offline tests before and after the fix, plus the existing zero-norm gradient and invalid-spatial-dimension tests. The RGB cases and input-preservation checks failed before the fix; all eight tests passed after it. I also ran Black, isort, and Ruff on both changed files. I did not run the full integration suite or pretrained-model download tests.

Types of changes

  • Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
  • Breaking change (fix or new feature that would cause existing functionality to change).
  • New tests added to cover the changes.
  • Integration tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh -f -u --net --coverage.
  • Quick tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh --quick --unittests --disttests.
  • In-line docstrings updated.
  • Documentation updated, tested make html command in the docs/ folder.

I used an AI coding assistant to help investigate and draft this; I reviewed and tested every change.

📝 Walkthrough

torchvision_zscore_norm now uses broadcasted channel statistics on the input device instead of in-place channel updates. Tests check normalization values, input preservation, dtype and device, and finite perceptual-loss results and gradients.

Document torchvision_zscore_norm.

The modified definition has no docstring. Add Google-style Args and Returns sections for x and the normalized tensor.

Add docstrings to the new test definitions.

The two new test classes and three test methods lack docstrings. The methods accept channels or dtype, so document those parameters in Google-style Args sections.
