What

Decode and encode Anthropic MCP server and toolset definitions through the typed IR, including authorization tokens and per-tool settings.

Support mcp-client-2025-11-20. The deprecated mcp-client-2025-04-04 format is unsupported.

Why

Preserve MCP definitions when routing Anthropic requests, including reconstruction after changing the target model or system instruction.

Closes SWITCH-1487.

Notes for reviewers

This PR builds upon #1037 and should merge after it. The diff against main includes that PR's changes until it merges.

Start with decode_anthropic_tools, decode_mcp, and encode_anthropic_tools in crates/switchyard-translation/src/codecs/anthropic/buffered.rs. Tests in the existing request_translation.rs cover replay, reconstruction, supported fields, and malformed definitions. Reconstruction preserves the fields represented in the IR, matching the scope of ordinary function tools.

Validation passed:

  • cargo test -p switchyard-translation --locked
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings
  • cargo fmt --all --check

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for configuring and translating MCP servers and toolsets in Anthropic requests.
    • Added protocol support for MCP streaming events, including tool calls, announcements, approvals, and completed content.
    • Added broader MCP request validation and preservation across supported translation workflows.
  • Bug Fixes

    • MCP credentials, authorization tokens, and header values are now masked in errors, including streamed errors.
    • Reduced sensitive provider details in trace-level streaming diagnostics.
  • Compatibility

    • MCP streaming events now produce clear terminal errors when sent through unsupported output formats.

Walkthrough

The PR adds MCP request translation for Anthropic, MCP stream aggregation in the protocol layer, and terminal errors for unsupported MCP stream encodings. It also adds MCP credential redaction to client error handling and tests for redaction and fallback-credit retries.

Changes

MCP Protocol and Translation

Layer / File(s) Summary
MCP stream chunks and aggregation
crates/protocol/src/stream.rs
The protocol adds MCP stream chunk variants. Synthetic streams emit completed MCP blocks, and the response accumulator assembles indexed MCP calls and blocks.
Anthropic MCP request translation
crates/protocol/src/llm.rs, crates/switchyard-translation/src/codecs/anthropic/buffered.rs, crates/switchyard-translation/tests/request_translation.rs
Anthropic request translation decodes and validates MCP server definitions and toolsets, and encodes them as separate server and tool arrays. Tests cover preservation modes, validation, and target formats.
Unsupported MCP stream encoding
crates/switchyard-translation/src/codecs/{anthropic,openai_chat,responses}/stream.rs, crates/switchyard-translation/tests/stream_translation.rs
The stream encoders report terminal errors for MCP chunks they do not support. The Responses decoder logs event types instead of full raw events. Tests check terminal errors across formats.

MCP Credential Redaction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Credential extraction and buffered errors
crates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rs
The client extracts MCP credential patterns and redacts them from non-success responses, error envelopes, and translated failures. Buffered responses retain patterns for later processing.
Stream redaction and credential tests
crates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rs, crates/libsy-llm-client/README.md, crates/libsy-llm-client/tests/{fallback_credit,redact_credentials}.rs
Streaming errors receive MCP credential redaction, while successful output remains unchanged. Tests cover redaction and fallback-credit retries; the README documents the redaction behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d28be

MCP credentials embedded in server URL query strings can still appear in returned or logged errors when the provider echoes them in a different form than the original query. Fix the redaction before merging, because this PR presents MCP credentials as masked in errors.

Add per-query-value redaction without broad substring replacement.

mcp_token_patterns stores each MCP URL query as one literal string. It does not store individual query values. An upstream error that echoes only a value, one parameter, reordered parameters, a JSON-escaped separator, or a percent-decoded value can therefore bypass redaction on the non-success, translated, and stream error paths.

Do not add every query value to the existing literal matcher. A value such as version=1 would replace every 1 in an error body. Keep whole-query patterns, but represent query values separately and match raw and decoded values with a documented minimum-length or credential-value policy and boundary-aware matching. Add tests for value-only, reordered, JSON-escaped, and percent-decoded echoes.
