The Harnesses page previews and applies routing settings for Codex CLI, the Codex app, Claude Code, and Pi. It shows the files that will change, backs up the originals, and supports Restore. A custom file or named account selects a separate destination.

Named Codex and Claude accounts use separate directories under ~/.switchyard/accounts and the harness's own login command. Switchyard does not copy login tokens. Malformed settings, symlinks, a preview that no longer matches the current files, and unsupported login forwarding stop the change before writes. Pi replaces two files separately with a best-effort rollback, so an interrupted change can require Restore.

In the terminal app, Harnesses is page 5. p previews the settings change, i reviews and applies it (type INSTALL), u reviews and restores the original settings (type RESTORE), n adds an account, l signs in to the selected account again, o opens the account folder in $VISUAL or $EDITOR, and d archives the account (type its name). t selects the next harness, a the next account, and x a custom settings file. Adding an account and signing in run the harness's login command in a new terminal window, so they do not work over SSH.

Walkthrough

The desktop app adds settings management for Codex, Claude, and Pi. It adds named accounts for Codex and Claude, with controller and TUI workflows for previewing, installing, restoring, and managing accounts. Platform-specific terminal launching supports these workflows.

Changes

Harness settings and accounts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Harness settings inspection and previews
crates/switchyard-desktop/src/harness.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/server_config.rs
Harness settings can be inspected, validated, transformed, and previewed for Codex, Claude, and Pi. Preview output masks credentials and endpoint secrets. Executable discovery and route context-window lookup are also added.
Reviewed installation and restoration
crates/switchyard-desktop/src/harness.rs
Installation and restoration use reviewed file snapshots, backups, recovery markers, atomic replacement, and rollback. Tests cover validation, interrupted restoration, and file changes.
Account lifecycle and terminal launching
crates/switchyard-desktop/src/accounts.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/windows.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/server.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/main.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/Cargo.toml, crates/switchyard-desktop/tests/windows_terminal.rs
Codex and Claude accounts can be discovered, created, logged into, and archived. Windows and non-Windows terminal launch paths are added, with a Windows integration test for argument and environment handling.
Controller actions and snapshots
crates/switchyard-desktop/src/controller.rs
Controller actions and snapshots cover harness and account state. The controller validates settings destinations and route compatibility, and coordinates preview, install, restore, and account operations.
Harnesses page and user workflows
crates/switchyard-desktop/src/tui.rs, crates/switchyard-desktop/src/main.rs
The TUI adds harness and account selection, settings previews, installation and restoration forms, and navigation for the Harnesses page. Tests cover restore confirmation and preview retention.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 85edf

Before merging, fix three issues:

  • Linux login: account login on Linux may open the login script in an editor instead of running it, while the app still says login started.
  • Codex preview: the settings review for Codex can hide a change that deletes the user's context-window setting.
  • Windows login: a successful login launch can be reported as an error.

A smaller form-state bug can also block previews that use a custom settings file.

Then previews changes in a pile.
The harness paths are neat and clear,
Accounts can switch from year to year.

Harness::CodexCli and Harness::CodexApp to include /model_context_window, and
add a display case that renders its numeric Value directly instead of using the
hidden placeholder, so additions and removals appear in the preview.

Review comments at @crates/switchyard-desktop/src/server.rs:
- Around line 456-480: Update open_terminal_script so Linux launches the
retained script through a terminal emulator rather than calling command("open",
…), which only delegates to xdg-open; use an appropriate terminal command such
as x-terminal-emulator, $TERMINAL, or gnome-terminal, and return a clear
manual-login error if none is available. Preserve the existing non-Linux
behavior, cleanup on launch failure, and successful return semantics.

Review comments at @crates/switchyard-desktop/src/tui.rs:
- Around line 440-446: Update the FormKind::SettingsFile branch to clear
missing_account when applying a custom settings file, alongside resetting
account, before calling preview_install. Preserve the existing settings_file and
preview behavior.

Review comments at @crates/switchyard-desktop/src/windows.rs:
- Around line 50-54: Update open_terminal to call keep on the temporary launch
file before spawning the child process. If child.spawn fails, remove the kept
file and return the spawn error; preserve successful launch behavior without
calling keep afterward.
