Description

Models occasionally answer a ReAct prompt with a JSON object instead of the text format, e.g. {"Thought": "...", "Action": "clinical_limits", "Action Input": {"query": "..."}}. The quoted keys do not match the parser's text patterns, so ReActOutputParser raised missing_action and agent_node accepted the JSON as a direct answer — the tool the model asked for was never called.

This parses that shape explicitly in ReActOutputParser: quoted keys with case-insensitive matching and action_input/input variants, serializing a structured action input back to JSON. A JSON object with an Action key but no action input now raises the existing missing_action_input error instead of being accepted, and JSON objects without an Action key keep their previous behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • ReAct agents can now interpret actions supplied as JSON objects, including action keys with different casing, spacing, or supported underscore formatting.
    • Action inputs that are not strings are converted to JSON text. Missing inputs or blank and non-string action values result in a parsing error.
    • JSON objects without an action key continue to use the existing text-format parsing behavior.

… final answers

Models can answer a ReAct prompt with a JSON object whose quoted keys evade the text patterns (for example {"Thought": "...", "Action": "clinical_limits", "Action Input": {...}}). The parser then raised missing_action and agent_node accepted the JSON as a direct answer, so the requested tool was never called (NVIDIA#2274). Parse that shape explicitly - quoted keys, case-insensitive, with 'action_input'/'input' variants - and fall through to the missing_action_input error when no input is present. Adds parser regression tests.

Walkthrough

The ReAct output parser now checks JSON objects for actions before applying its existing text parser. It recognizes normalized action and input keys, serializes non-string inputs as JSON, and raises parsing errors for invalid actions or missing inputs. Tests cover these cases and objects without an action.

The parser checks JSON objects before the existing text parser. It recognizes normalized Action and Action Input keys, with Input as a fallback. It preserves string inputs and JSON-serializes other values. Tests cover normalized keys, serialized inputs, missing inputs, invalid action values, and objects without an action.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

JSON ReAct actions are now parsed instead of being accepted as final answers. One narrow edge case remains: a JSON null action input is treated as missing. It is low impact and can be fixed in a small follow-up.

An Action key with a null, blank, or non-string value was treated as 'no action', so agent_node accepted the JSON as a direct answer instead of retrying. Track key presence separately and raise a retry-compatible parse error for unusable values (CodeRabbit review on NVIDIA#2275).

Good catch. Addressed in cabc68a: _parse_json_action now tracks Action key presence separately, requires a non-empty string action name, and raises a retry-compatible ReActOutputParserException for null/blank/non-string values instead of falling through to the direct-answer path. Added a parametrized regression test covering all four value shapes.

584-592: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Exercise JSON ReAct responses through agent_node.

The added tests call ReActOutputParser.aparse directly. Existing agent_node tests cover text-format actions or JSON-valued Action Input, but not the new JSON object response. They also do not connect parser failures to retry/error handling.

Add boundary tests that mock _stream_llm with the JSON response, assert a valid action produces AgentDecision.TOOL, and assert missing Action Input or unusable Action values produce an error without setting final_answer.

… final answers (NVIDIA#2275)

Models occasionally answer a ReAct prompt with a JSON object instead of the text format, e.g. `{"Thought": "...", "Action": "clinical_limits", "Action Input": {"query": "..."}}`. The quoted keys do not match the parser's text patterns, so `ReActOutputParser` raised `missing_action` and `agent_node` accepted the JSON as a direct answer — the tool the model asked for was never called.

This parses that shape explicitly in `ReActOutputParser`: quoted keys with case-insensitive matching and `action_input`/`input` variants, serializing a structured action input back to JSON. A JSON object with an `Action` key but no action input now raises the existing `missing_action_input` error instead of being accepted, and JSON objects without an `Action` key keep their previous behavior.

Closes NVIDIA#2274
