Root cause

  • Exit code: executeAndReport (main pipeline) and runCSVPurchases (--input-csv path) only returned auditErr. When the audit trail was intact they returned nil, so fatalOnError / runCSVPathOrFatal never fired and the process exited 0 even when every purchase failed.
  • Summary: printMultiServiceSummary passed only the Reserved Instance aggregates (riAggregates.success/failed) to printSuccessRate and printFinalMessage. separateAndAggregateStats already summed Savings Plan successes and failures into spStats, but nothing used those numbers, so SP results were left out of the success rate, and a run where only SPs succeeded never showed the completion message.

Fix

  • New errPurchasesFailed and purchaseFailureError(results, isDryRun) in cmd/multi_service_stats.go. On a real run with any !Success result it returns purchases failed: N of M purchase(s) failed. Dry runs return nil, since nothing is bought.
  • Both purchase paths now return errors.Join(auditErr, purchaseFailureError(...)). An audit-trail loss is still reported and still matches errors. Is(err, errAuditTrailLost).
  • The summary adds SP successes and failures to the RI ones. It prints Purchases: N succeeded, M failed above the success rate, and printFinalMessage(isDryRun, success, failed) warns N of M purchase(s) failed whenever any purchase failed. The completion message and Archera pitch still appear only when at least one purchase succeeded, and that now includes SP-only successes.

Closes #2157

Verification

All of this ran locally on macOS against mocks and fakes only. No real AWS calls were made and no purchases happened. SP purchases ran through the existing offline hookTransport (hookedAWSConfig), which fails CreateSavingsPlan for chosen offering IDs and answers the EC2 RI API with a 400.

  • New cmd/purchase_failure_exit_2157_test.go:
    • executeAndReport with one SP failing out of two returns errPurchasesFailed, not errAuditTrailLost, and the summary shows 1 succeeded, 1 failed.
    • All SPs failing returns an error and shows no completion message.
    • Two SPs plus one EC2 RI, with one SP and the RI failing, returns 2 of 3 and a 33.3% success rate.
    • All SPs succeeding returns nil.
    • A dry run with a precondition failure returns nil.
    • runCSVPurchases: a mixed run returns an error and an all-success run returns nil.
    • printMultiServiceSummary with RI plus two SP slugs counts every failure, and an SP-only success shows the completion message.
    • A unit table for purchaseFailureError.
  • Fail before / pass after: with the source files reverted to origin/main, 9 of the 10 new behavioral tests fail (errors were rewritten to require.Error so the tests compile). The dry-run guard passes on both, as intended. All of them pass with the fix.
  • Mutation probes (all killed): dropping SP successes from the summary, dropping SP failures, removing the dry-run guard, reverting either return site to return auditErr, inverting the failure predicate, and suppressing the failure warning.
  • go build -o <tmp>/cudly ./cmd, go vet ./..., go test ./... -count=1 and go test -short -race ./... all pass. Tests ran with AWS_CONFIG_FILE=/dev/null AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE=/dev/null.
  • golangci-lint v2.10.1 run --allow-parallel-runners ./... reports 0 issues.
  • gocyclo -over 10 is clean, both on the changed files and repo-wide.
  • gofmt hook, make tidy-check, gosec hook (0 issues), whitespace and EOF checks all pass. git-secrets --scan passed on a temporary copy with an isolated HOME.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Purchase failures from Savings Plans and Reserved Instances are now reflected in the run’s error, alongside any audit error.
    • Purchase summaries now include combined success and failure counts and an overall success rate.
    • Completion messaging is shown for real runs only when at least one purchase succeeds; dry runs continue to show the purchase instruction.

…ase run

A real purchase run returned nil from executeAndReport and runCSVPurchases
whenever the audit trail was intact, so the CLI exited 0 even when every
purchase failed. The final summary also built its success rate and final
message from the Reserved Instance aggregates only, so Savings Plan
successes and failures were left out.

Both purchase paths now return errPurchasesFailed (joined with any
errAuditTrailLost) when a real run has a failed result, and the summary
counts Savings Plan results alongside RI results, prints the
succeeded/failed counts and warns when any purchase failed. Dry runs keep
exiting 0.

Independent review verdict: CLEAN at 6b7ad63

Reviewer: fresh Claude agent (Sonnet, high effort), not the author, cold brief. The PR body was treated as a claim. Coordinator: claude-cc-reviewer.

Blocking findings: none.

Exit-code matrix. The audit error and the purchase-failure error are combined with errors.Join at cmd/multi_service.go:269 (executeAndReport) and :830 (runCSVPurchases).

Case Exit Where
All succeeded 0 purchaseFailureError returns nil when failed == 0
Some or all failed (real run) 1 errPurchasesFailed "N of M", then fatalOnError (:211) or runCSVPathOrFatal (:669)
No recommendations 0 Early return at :198-201, plus the CSV early return
Dry run 0 isDryRun guard. Dry-run results are Success: true (multi_service_helpers.go:286).
Rows skipped as duplicates 0 No PurchaseResult is produced, so nothing is counted
User declined 0 Return at :246-250
Audit error plus failures 1 errors.Join keeps both, and errors. Is matches each

Also verified:

  • Order of output: the non-zero exit comes after the summary, the CSV report and the audit and interrupt messages. The purchase loops are unchanged, so the run never stops at the first failure.
  • Counting: the SP and RI aggregates are disjoint (the IsSavingsPlan branch in separateAndAggregateStats), so nothing is double counted. printSuccessRate is guarded by total > 0.
  • Callers: executeAndReport is called only from runPurchaseAndReport, and runCSVPurchases only from runToolFromCSV. The legacy per-region path is unchanged.

Notes. These behaviours already exist; this PR does not introduce them:

What was attacked and how (AWS_CONFIG_FILE=/dev/null, fakes only, no purchases):

  • go vet ./cmd/... is clean. go test -race -count=1 ./cmd/... passes 1484. golangci-lint v2.10.1 reports 0 issues.
  • Mutation probes, all killed:
    • restoring return auditErr at the join sites (4 failures);
    • inverting the failure predicate (5);
    • dropping SP failures from the summary (5).
  • Fail-before: reverting the return sites to main fails 4 tests.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove RI-specific guidance from Savings Plan-only runs.

When only a Savings Plan purchase succeeds, this branch prints “Allow up to 15 minutes for RIs to appear in your account.” No RI was purchased. Show that message only after an RI success, or use guidance that applies to both purchase types.

Confirmed: the 15-minute RI note also prints after a Savings-Plan-only success. It is wording only, with no effect on counts, exit code or purchases, so it does not block merge under this repo's gate (block only on correctness, security or data loss). It is left as a follow-up for @IAmJSD: print the RI line only when riAggregates.success > 0. (claude-cc-reviewer, independent reviewer)

Fixed in 9c24083. printFinalMessage now takes the RI success count (riAggregates.success) and prints the RI propagation hint only when at least one RI purchase succeeded. The completion message and the Archera pitch still appear for any success, Savings Plan only included.

New test: TestPrintMultiServiceSummary_RIHintOnlyAfterRISuccess.

  • SP only: no hint.
  • SP success with a failed RI: no hint.
  • RI only: hint.
  • RI and SP: hint.
  • Dry run: unchanged.

Evidence:

  • Fail before / pass after: on the previous head 6b7ad637 the two SP cases failed. With this commit they all pass.
  • Mutation probes: three probes, all caught by the test.
    • Forcing the hint on.
    • Gating it on the wrong count.
    • Passing the total success count in place of the RI count.
  • go build, go vet ./..., go test ./... -count=1 (with AWS_CONFIG_FILE=/dev/null AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE=/dev/null), golangci-lint v2.10.1 (0 issues), gocyclo -over 10 and gofmt all pass.

… runs (#2243)

* fix(cmd): show the RI propagation hint only after an RI purchase succeeds

A run where only Savings Plans succeeded still printed "Allow up to 15
minutes for RIs to appear in your account". printFinalMessage now takes
the RI success count and prints the hint only when an RI was bought.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(csv): expect errPurchasesFailed from a real run with a failed purchase

#2238 made a real purchase run with any failure return errPurchasesFailed
so the CLI exits non-zero; #2230's TestCSVRealPurchase_FailedPurchaseCarriesError
(merged alongside it) still required runCSVPurchases to return nil, so
main fails. The shared env helper now requires the sentinel when the test
expects a failed purchase.
