Goal

Parse the thread.updated, user.deleted and notification.message_new events with the generated event models.

Part of AND-1291

Implementation

  • Vendor the generated ThreadUpdatedEvent, UserDeletedEvent and NotificationNewMessageEvent, and delete the hand-written DTOs.
  • The adapters require the fields the spec marks optional but the domain events need (the cid, channel type and id, and the thread on thread.updated), and reject an event missing one.
  • notification.message_new maps its channel and message with the generated channel and message mappers.

Testing

GeneratedThreadUserMessageEventParsingTest covers each event, a nanosecond created_at, and a missing required field, including the delete flags on user.deleted and message_id and watcher_count on notification.message_new.

On a device: received a new message notification in a channel the user wasn't watching, a deleted user from a channel they had posted in, and a thread title update. Each event carried the right channel, message, user, thread and unread counts.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of new-message notifications, thread updates, and user-deletion events, including their timestamps and event details.
    • Added checks for required channel and thread information so incomplete notification and thread-update events are rejected rather than mapped with missing data.
    • Improved parsing compatibility for these event payloads.

Walkthrough

Notification-new-message, thread-updated, and user-deleted WebSocket events now use generated network models for parsing and domain-event mapping. The change removes their handwritten DTOs and updates test fixtures and parsing coverage.

Changes

Generated event parsing and mapping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generated event models and parsing
stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/network/models/*Event.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/parser2/adapters/EventAdapter.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/model/dto/EventDtos.kt
Adds generated models and routes the three event types through them. Removes the replaced DTO declarations.
Generated event dispatch and mapping
stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/mapping/EventMapping.kt
Dispatches generated models to domain-event mappings. Requires channel identifiers for notification and thread events, requires a thread for thread updates, and defaults notification counts to zero.
Generated event fixtures and parsing tests
stream-chat-android-client/src/test/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/EventChatJsonProvider.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/test/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/mapping/EventMappingTestArguments.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/test/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/parser/EventArguments.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/test/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/parser2/GeneratedThreadUserMessageEventParsingTest.kt
Updates fixtures and expected mappings to generated model shapes. Adds parsing checks for event types, timestamps, payload fields, and missing required fields.

Change: Refactor

Suggested reviewers: velikovpetar

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 24197

The migration has a bounded compatibility concern: user-deletion events now require six additional fields that domain mapping ignores. Confirm the WebSocket payload guarantee or permit their omission. No supported WebSocket failure has been established.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 24197

Deletion and new-message notification events now require additional fields. The supplied examples satisfy these requirements, but compatibility with all supported servers and recovery after rejection remain unconfirmed. No expanded privileges or verified exploit was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: The new mandatory notification metadata and deletion-option fields narrow the accepted wire contract without changing the corresponding domain outputs. Previously accepted payloads that omit these fields now fail before delivery. Production producer compatibility and socket-level recovery are unconfirmed, leaving a bounded compatibility and failure-containment concern rather than a verified security vulnerability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is receiving-client parsing and delivery of the three migrated events. Broader session disruption, deletion-cleanup effects, and cross-tenant impact are not established by the inspected paths.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Socket construction distinguishes JWT user connections from explicit anonymous connections. Event parsing performs type dispatch and required-value validation; those checks are not identity or authorization checks. Producer-side authorization was not established in this review.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Missing mandatory fields are rejected before domain-event delivery. The inspected parser path does not supply a fallback for that rejection; whether the socket contains the failure to one event or recovers through reconnect and replay remains unresolved.

six deletion-option fields in `UserDeletedEvent`; if any may be omitted, make
the fields nullable so Moshi can deserialize the event before `EventMapping.kt`
