Goal

Parse the channel state returned by queryChannels, queryChannel and grouped channels with the generated models.

Part of AND-1291

Implementation

  • Point the three query endpoints at the generated QueryChannelsResponse, ChannelStateResponse and GroupedQueryChannelsResponse, and delete the hand-written QueryChannelsResponse and QueryGroupedChannelsResponse.
  • Map the channel state with the generated channel and message mappers. A state without a channel fails the call instead of throwing.
  • Map pending messages from the generated PendingMessageResponse. Their metadata is server-side only and never sent to client-side callers, so it stays empty as before.
  • The update, delete, truncate and member endpoints still parse the hand-written envelope; they move in a follow-up.

Testing

E2E needs the mock server to send duration on single channel queries, as the backend does (mock server PR to follow).

MoshiChatApiTest covers a channel state with every field set, the single-channel conversion, and a state without a channel. Before this, a recorded channel state was mapped through both the old and the new path and produced the same Channel, including pending messages, hidden state, watchers and push preferences.

On a device: queried a channel with pinned, quoted and thread messages, a reaction, a live location, a draft, reads and a push preference through queryChannel and queryChannels. Every field was set and both calls agreed. Hiding the channel returned the hidden flag and date, and offset pagination returned non-overlapping pages.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Channel and grouped-channel queries now handle a broader set of channel state, including messages, members, read state, and live locations.
    • Channel state from different query types is mapped consistently, with missing watcher counts defaulting to zero and unread counts kept in sync.
    • Queries fail with an error when a returned channel state lacks its channel.

Walkthrough

Channel and grouped-channel queries now use network response models for channel state. MoshiChatApi converts the response fields into domain channels and validates that each state contains a channel.

Changes

Channel-State Query Responses

Layer / File(s) Summary
Network response contracts
stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/network/models/*, stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/endpoint/ChannelApi.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/model/response/QueryGroupedChannelsResponse.kt
Network models now define channel-state, channel-query, and grouped-query responses. ChannelApi returns these network response types, and the previous API2 grouped-query response model is removed.
Channel-state conversion and query mapping
stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/mapping/DomainMapping.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/main/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/MoshiChatApi.kt
DomainMapping converts channel-state and pending-message responses. MoshiChatApi maps single, list, and grouped query results through a shared path and fails if a state has no channel.
Fixtures and response parsing tests
stream-chat-android-client/src/test/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/Mother.kt, stream-chat-android-client/src/test/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/api2/*, stream-chat-android-client/src/test/java/io/getstream/chat/android/client/parser2/*
Fixtures and tests use the network response models. Tests cover channel-state mapping, missing channels, grouped-query responses, and active live-location parsing.

The confirmed issue is redundant processing in grouped queries. No material failure is established that would block merging.

1570-1583: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Map each grouped channel state once.

toChannelsCall first maps every state through flattenChannelState to validate it. It then discards that result. Each group then maps the same states again with mapNotNull(::flattenChannelState). This doubles the mapping work for messages, members, and reads, and it runs the channel and message transformers twice for each channel. Validate the states first, then build the groups from the mapped channels.
