Reject unreadable template paths.
statSync(rawValue).isFile() checks only the file type. It allows an unreadable regular file to be saved, then loadTemplateFile fails when it calls readFile. Call accessSync(rawValue, constants.R_OK) after the isFile() check inside the existing try block. Add a regression test for an unreadable regular file on platforms that support permission-mode testing.

PR #287 — fix(config): preserve template path on set
Approve — clean, well-tested fix for a real data-loss bug.
What it does
- Adds
templatePathtoCONFIG_SET_KEYSsoconfig setrecognizes it - Copies
templatePathinto the rebuilt config object (the core fix for #283) - Validates the path on set: must exist, must be a file, must be readable; resolved to an absolute path
- 7 new test cases covering preservation, update, relative-path resolution, and error cases
Strengths
- Correctly addresses the root cause — the missing
templatePathline in thenextConfigobject literal is the exact one-liner the bug needed, and the PR doesn't overreach - Validation is thorough — existence, isFile, readability are all checked with appropriate error messages
- Good edge-case coverage — parent directory inaccessible test, unreadable file, directory-as-path
- Platform-aware tests — POSIX-only permission tests are correctly skipped on Windows with
t.skip() - Existing config preserved on failure — every rejection test asserts the old
templatePathis unchanged
Minor observations (non-blocking)
-
TOCTOU between
statSyncandaccessSync: A file could be deleted or have permissions changed between the two calls. Acceptable for a CLI tool — worst case is a confusing error message at an unlikely moment. -
resolve(rawValue)is called onstatSyncsuccess, not validated against the original raw input: The user passesrelative-template.md, which resolves againstcwd. The test assertsconfig.templatePath === realpathSync(templatePath)— this works because both produce the canonical absolute path, but if a symlink were involved the resolved and realpath'd paths could diverge. Fine in practice. -
No test for clearing
templatePath: The code path returnsundefinedwhenrawValueis empty, but no test coversconfig set templatePath "". Worth adding for completeness. -
The
'code' in errorguard is correct but verbose — an alternative isinstanceof Errorcheck. Not a blocking concern.
