Our Story

From research lab to the home of open models

Featherless started as a research team, not an infrastructure company. Our founders co-led RWKV, the Linux Foundation project behind one of the most significant open-source model architectures — an attention-free design that made frontier-scale AI radically cheaper to run.

Getting those models into production revealed the real bottleneck: hundreds of thousands of open models exist, but almost none of them are easy to run. We built Featherless to close that gap. The company began as Recursal.AI — today the name is Featherless, and the same research DNA drives everything we ship.

2023
Born from open-source research
Eugene Cheah, Harrison Vanderbyl, and Wesley George co-lead RWKV — a Linux Foundation project pioneering attention-free model architectures — and found the company to bring open models into production.
2024
Recursal becomes Featherless
Recursal.AI rebrands as Featherless and launches the serverless inference platform, bringing its research on efficient architectures to production inference.
2025
Largest model library in the ecosystem
Featherless becomes the fastest-growing inference partner in the Hugging Face ecosystem, serving more open-source models than any other provider — spanning language, vision, and multimodal.

$20M Series A
AMD Ventures and Airbus Ventures co-lead a $20M Series A — with BMW i Ventures, Kickstart Ventures, Panache Ventures, and Wavemaker Ventures — to scale open-source AI infrastructure worldwide.
