Is Directus free to self-host?
A commercial license is only required for production projects within entities exceeding $5 million in total annual finances.
Inspired by Unity’s software license, we’ve defined total finances as the largest of your aggregate gross revenues, entire budget, and/or funding (no matter the source) — each calculated based on the most recent 12-month period.
If your total finances are under $5,000,000 USD, you are free to use Directus however you see fit. If you’re using Directus in a non-production instance, this change doesn’t affect you.
If your total finances are over $5,000,000 and you’re using Directus in production, you will have to purchase a commercial license.
To illustrate the various use cases:
- Individual developer making a non-commercial hobby project — No cost
- Small business with total finances under $5,000,000 — No cost
- Large enterprise non-production use — No cost
- Large enterprise production use — Commercial license required
- Small agency building projects for others — Depends on your client

Why BSL 1.1?
There are many software licenses available for a wide variety of (specialty) use cases. We felt that BSL1.1 came the closest to keeping the spirit of Open Source intact while allowing us to make sure it’s financially sustainable.
We also noticed that many of our favorite projects, like Sentry, CockroachDB, and Couchbase all have successfully adopted BSL as their license.

What is the difference between "Studio Users" and regular "Users"?
Studio Users are users that have access to the Directus Data Studio. These are typically members of your team who use the studio to interact with your data – like creating new blog posts, editing page content, managing assets, or more.
The technical criteria for a Studio User is:
- At least one policy with 'Admin Access' enabled.
- At least one policy with 'App Access' enabled, allowing access to the Data Studio.
Other users that ONLY access Directus via the APIs do not count towards your Studio User total.
An API Only user might be a person who's interacting with your frontend application, an internal microservice that fetches or pushes data to Directus, or a third party system sending data to Directus.
Where can I see my invoices?
You can access all of your team's invoices and transaction history directly through our Cloud Dashboard.
Do you offer support for self-hosted projects?
Anyone can access our Community Support and knowledge base on GitHub Discussion. Premium support options are only available to Enterprise Cloud customers or paid agreements. Contact our team to discuss further.
How much do Enterprise Cloud projects cost?

Do you offer non-profit or open-source discounts?
Yes, we do! Being open source ourselves, we're aware of how important it is to support open-source maintainers. If you are the maintainer of an open-source project (see policy below), contact us to discuss available discounts.
Your Directus Cloud owner account email must match a GitHub account that is the primary maintainer of an open source repository and must have existed for at least 6 months and/or have 100 stars.
