Good to know
What is the difference between cloud hosting and the self-hosted license?
With cloud hosting we run the WoltLab Suite entirely for you — including the server, updates and backups. You are ready to go within minutes. With the self-hosted license (on-premises) you download the software and install it on your own webspace or server. Cloud is the fastest path for most communities; self-hosted offers maximum control.
Can I switch between cloud and self-hosted later?
Yes. Your data is yours. Using our import and export functions, content can be moved between cloud hosting and your own installation — in both directions.
Which apps are included?
All cloud plans include Forum, Blog, Calendar, Database, Filebase and Gallery. With the self-hosted license you select the apps you want individually at purchase.
Is there a minimum contract term?
Cloud plans are billed monthly or yearly and can be cancelled at any time to the end of the term. The self-hosted license is a one-time payment including one year of updates.
How safe is my data?
Cloud hosting runs GDPR compliant in German data centers with daily, geo-redundant backups. The WoltLab Suite is developed in Germany and is consistently committed to data protection.
In accordance with Directive 2006/112/EC, as amended, prices may vary according to the country of residence of the customer. The prices in the offers are inclusive of VAT applicable in Germany.

What Costs Are Involved in the Migration?
Each migration is carried out by us individually, taking into account your requirements, both in terms of the source software and the scope of the desired data transfer.
Please contact us in advance so that we can clarify all questions.
What Happens During a Migration?
The contents of your existing installation will be transferred to our software, only data that is part of the original software or generated by it will be considered. However, contents provided by extensions (plugins or hacks) are not recognized and thus omitted.
For the migration we need the complete contents from the file system as well as from the database. We will discuss the exact procedure directly with you and support you at every step.
Only available when using an own domain, the setup of WebAuthn is carried out by WoltLab in consultation with the customer.
In addition to standard procedures such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect 1.0, we can also cover complex solutions such as SAML, Okta or SAP CDC.
The installation of apps and plugins from third-party sources or custom-made products is possible after individual agreement. The packages in question will be reviewed in advance by WoltLab staff for security and stability. We reserve the right to refuse the installation in case of serious defects.
Please contact us for a non-binding offer.
The backups of the last 7 days are additionally stored in a secondary data center more than 200km away. We comply with the criteria of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for geo-redundant data storage.
All of our plans feature a powerful protection against such overload attacks (known as “Distributed Denial of Service” / “DDoS”). The infrastructure required for this is located directly on site in the data center, and attacks are detected and absorbed by this solution before any damage is caused.
The data center is certified according to ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 50001, PCI DSS, ISAE 3402 and is TÜV certified.
An equally important aspect is the processing of email bounces, these being emails that are rejected by the receiving email server. The causes can be very different, typically these are email accounts that no longer exist. However, there are also cases in which filter rules are configured incorrectly and emails are rejected by accident.
All returned emails are actively processed by WoltLab and the necessary steps are taken to ensure that all emails continue to reach their recipients.
As part of your business continuity management, we offer a replication service for your community’s daily backups. Once a day, a copy of the last backup is uploaded to a server of your choice. The transfer is fully encrypted, the backup itself is symmetrically encrypted with AES-256 in CTR mode.
