The Problem

AI is developing too rapidly for humanity to stay in control.

AI could be the best thing that ever happens to humanity. It could also be the last. A handful of companies are racing to build the most powerful technology in history with no oversight and, by their own admission, they don’t fully understand what they’re building.

How much of the internet has to be fake?
How many times will no one take responsibility when AI goes wrong?
How many artists have to compete with copies of themselves?
How many scams and deepfakes? How many elections undermined?
How many kids grow up shaped by algorithms no parent chose?
How close to surveillance dystopias, AI-designed pandemics, killer robots, human extinction?

This situation is unacceptable.

The Plan

We demand one thing:
slow down AI.

We join hundreds of Nobel Prize winners, AI experts, and heads of state who are calling for no smarter-than-human AI to be built until scientists agree it can be done safely, and the public agrees to go ahead.

Build the brakes. A slowdown gives humanity time to figure out how to stay in control. Frontier AI is built with specialized chips: track and guard them, exactly like we track the ingredients for nukes and bioweapons. Governments can restrict how and when new AIs are built.
Enforce a speed limit. The race to develop AI punishes anyone who slows down and falls behind. That’s why the US, China, and major nations must agree to slow down together and enforce real safety standards. The International Atomic Energy Agency verifies nuclear compliance worldwide. We need a similar watchdog for AI.

Your voice can compel
governments to act.

The heads of all four leading AI companies are now publicly calling for a slowdown. And more than 1,300 of their own employees asked government to make that possible, because no one can stop alone.

That’s what governments are for. Lawmakers are starting to wake up, and voters are ahead of them: 68% back a pause on advanced AI and a ban on superintelligence.

But governments won’t act without seeing how much the public cares. With Team Human, we’re going to show them.

Humanity has come together many times.

Countries have cooperated before to solve global problems, with the backing of ordinary people.

We limited nuclear weapons

The ingredients for nukes are safely guarded because countries established a treaty to track and handle them.

We saved the ozone layer

The ozone layer survived destruction because countries signed an agreement banning the chemicals that were causing harm.

We eradicated smallpox

Smallpox killed hundreds of millions. Countries vaccinated against it together and it was eradicated by 1980.

We can do it again to slow down AI.

What happens to my signature?

Team Human will deliver your signature to lawmakers this fall. By providing your email, you’ll receive periodic updates about the Team Human campaign, related issues, and opportunities to take action. If you live outside the US, we won’t send emails unless you opt in. You can unsubscribe anytime.

Does Team Human sponsor creators?

Creators are posting organically. No creators were paid to sign the Team Human statement or join the Team Human campaign. The Center for AI Safety, which supports Team Human, has separately sponsored videos that discuss AI safety. Videos that receive sponsorship are required to include a clear disclosure.

What does it mean to slow down AI?

It means governments should limit the development of the most powerful AI systems. Because countries may not slow down alone, Team Human is calling for an international slowdown agreement.

Is a slowdown possible?

Yes. We have put limits on dangerous technology before, like chemical weapons, nuclear weapons, and human cloning. Many countries worked together to create those limits. We can agree to slow down AI too.

Who benefits from a slowdown?

You do. A slowdown gives all of us more time, and more say, in how AI changes our jobs, our communities, and our lives. No corporation should be allowed to race ahead faster than society can understand and prepare for.

Who sets the terms of a slowdown?

You do, through your government. The rules should come from the lawmakers you elect rather than the corporations building AI.
