Allow nullable method references for void functions - #1747
Conversation
Treat void functional-interface return types as having no nullness contract when checking method references. This permits references to nullable-returning methods when Java discards the returned value, while leaving parameter compatibility checks intact. Add JSpecify JDK model regression coverage for bound and static method references used by Map.forEach and Collection.forEach, the equivalent lambda form, and continued reporting of parameter-nullability mismatches. Fixes #1719
WalkthroughNullAway now treats void methods as not having non-null returns during override analysis. This prevents non-null return override validation from applying to void methods. A JSpecify compilation test covers nullable-returning method references passed to Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to The change is localized to void-return compatibility and regression coverage; the only outstanding issue is missing private-method documentation, which does not affect runtime behavior or create a merge-blocking risk. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)
