I can trace my whole self back to a profound love for truth. I love truth-seeking people and systems.

Work

I want to build robust systems that provide value to society and stand the test of time. My expertise and interest is in core infrastructure, queueing theory, semantics, security, and performance (from complex multi-system dynamics to fleet-sized scaling problems all the way down to CPU instruction pipelining and cache-line optimizations). I'm a self-learner that likes metacognition and interdisciplinarisms. To the extent that I have a specialization, I would characterize it as robust systems with low latency and high throughput.

Work Experience

I currently work at Woven by Toyota as the responsible person for all things Rust. This involves toolchain and compiler work, kicking off in-vehicle and off-vehicle software engineering projects in Rust across the company, safety-critical engineering, helping build the business case for Rust and securing funding, sponsoring and attending conferences, participating as a member of Rust Safety-Critical Consortium committees, and so on.

Side projects

  • Sometimes-contributor to the Rust ecosystem, e.g. rustc, rustup, cargo fmt
  • fbbmtg.com, website selling Magic: the Gathering cards

Play

  • Billiards/pool competitor
  • Recreational table tennis player
  • Board game geek
  • I care about quality things, especially tools (職人根性)
  • I enjoy contributing to open source software
  • I sometimes hack on my own side projects
  • Tinker with embedded devices, hardware projects, robotics

How web bloat impacts users with slow devices

In 2017, we looked at how web bloat affects users with slow connections. Even in the U.S., many users didn't have broadband speeds, making much of the web difficult to use. It's still the case that many users don't have broadband speeds, both …
