Gram is a source code editor and an IDE. It has a lot of features but is also very much a work in progress. It is a community project, although the community right now consists of one grumpy toad in its spare time and a small but dedicated group of contributors (much love to them). The project hopes to move slowly but steadily in the direction of stability, reliability and respect.

This project did not start with a vision of the perfect editor, but as a reaction against what was and still is happening to the world of software development, the world at large and to editors like VS Code, Zed and Vim. Its core philosophy is that writing code by hand with care is good and righteous, and aims to be a good tool for doing just that.

Gram started as a hard fork of the Zed editor. Read this for more details on the background and motivation behind this fork.

My goal is that Gram will be an editor that someone who is learning programming for the first time can download, install and use out of the box. No configuration or extensions should be necessary, and the editor should not try to push anything potentially malicious, distracting or confusing at them.

How to get it

Download binaries for Mac OS and Linux

For Mac OS, gram can also be installed via Homebrew:

brew install --cask gram

Arch Linux publishes official packages for Gram in the extra repository:

sudo pacman -S gram

Solus OS publishes official packages for Gram in their official repository:

sudo eopkg install gram

Documentation

The documentation comes built into the editor, and can also be read online. Note that the online documentation may not match your installed version of Gram.

Discussion

There is a community-managed chat forum for Gram using XMPP at gram@rooms.slidge.im. Any XMPP client should be able to connect, and there is a basic web UI available. There are chat logs available in an online archive as well.
