vindle is a minimal tiling Wayland compositor on wlroots. It is a fork of

swindle (itself a fork of dwl) with a comfortable standard keymap,

keyboard layouts out of the box, and a double border. Its goal is plain

window and input management: one tiling layout (dwindle) plus floating,

tags as a bitmask, predictable focus. It draws no bar, no widgets, no

wallpaper, no animations. External programs cover the rest: foot or

another terminal, fuzzel or another launcher, waybar or another bar,

swaybg or another wallpaper tool.

vindle is configured with a Lua file. The chain is

shipped in the repository, installed as

The running compositor watches the active file with inotify and

reloads it on save; input options (repeat rate, libinput settings,

keyboard layout) still require a restart. Unknown keys produce a warning

on standard error but do not stop the session.

speaks the frozen dwl-ipc protocol to query and drive the compositor

(tags, layouts, focused client).

Load the given Lua config instead of the default chain. The path must be

a readable regular file; a missing path exits with a clear error.

Run a shell command once the Wayland socket is live. Standard output of

the compositor is piped to the standard input of the command, so the

compositor never blocks on an unconsumed pipe.

Optional geometry and opacity animations, all driven by the scene graph.

Windows are configured once at their final size and only the compositor

side moves, so clients never repaint per frame. Durations are in

milliseconds, 0 disables the kind.

Durations of tiled geometry changes, window opening, window closing

and tag switches (default 260, 220, 220, 220). Open and close share

a duration so both directions of the slide mirror each other.

(scale in or out around the window center), fade (opacity only,

in place). Default slide for both: opening is the close animation

played in reverse.

The first layout is active at startup. Keybinds stay working in every

layout: binds are matched against the pressed keysym, then the unshifted

Nine tags as a bitmask. A window is visible when its tags and the

current view share at least one bit, so one window can sit on several

tags and several tags can be viewed at once.
