I like the idea of making this an optional search filter rather than changing the API defaults.

One additional signal could be repository activity patterns, such as a sudden burst of commits, releases, or tags combined with little meaningful contributor activity. No single signal reliably identifies spam, so combining multiple signals and letting users adjust the filter would help reduce false positives.

It would also be useful to show why a repository was filtered out, so legitimate new or experimental projects aren't unfairly hidden.
