When a GitHub Actions workflow executes normally via 1. The Workflow File is NOT on the Repository's Default Branch (Most Common)GitHub Actions only evaluates and registers scheduled cron jobs from the default branch (typically
2. The 60-Day Inactivity Auto-Disable RuleGitHub automatically disables scheduled workflows to save compute resources if there has been no commit or activity in the repository for 60 consecutive days.
3. UTC Evaluation vs. Local TimezoneGitHub cron syntax is strictly evaluated in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). on:
schedule:
# Runs at 08:00 UTC, NOT your local time!
- cron: '0 8 * * *'If you configured the cron expecting your local timezone (e.g., UTC-5, UTC+5:30), the scheduled run may be scheduled hours ahead or behind your expected window. 4. Peak-Hour Scheduling Delays (Top-of-the-Hour Latency)GitHub Actions runners experience massive spikes in scheduled jobs at the top of the hour (

one more cause to rule out after the default branch: a schedule on a repo with no activity for 60 days gets disabled automatically and the actions tab shows a banner to enable it again. also check that the cron line is valid and in UTC. if the job matters, don't rely on schedule alone. github says scheduled runs can be delayed or dropped when load is high. trigger it from an outside cron with workflow_dispatch and put a dead man's switch on it so you hear about a run that never happened. |

One detail worth correcting in the earlier replies: GitHub’s current docs say scheduled workflows use UTC by default, but an IANA For this report, I’d check these in order: (1) confirm the workflow file containing Official references: https://docs.github.com/en/actions/how-tos/troubleshoot-workflows and https://docs.github.com/en/actions/reference/workflows-and-actions/events-that-trigger-workflows#schedule I can’t tell from the details posted which cause applies, so I’d avoid claiming that any one check is definitely the fix. |
