Supported non-privileged ways to inspect effective configuration and image identity in Codespaces (web) #210631

Here is a breakdown of the documented, non-privileged verification methods available in GitHub Codespaces (web) for each of your questions: 1. Inspecting Effective Configuration, Lifecycle Commands, and Resolved EnvGitHub does not expose a standalone REST endpoint for the resolved configuration, but you can inspect the full merged result entirely without
2. Correlating Container Images with Manifest DigestsWithout access to the Docker socket or Docker CLI, image provenance can be verified through:
3. Creation vs. Resumption Logs: Retention, Rotation, and Coverage
4. Stopped vs. Running Inspection MatrixSummary: While stopped, the REST API only reveals management metadata (SKU, repository, devcontainer path). All internal container image digests, effective metadata merges, and lifecycle logs require a running session to read the persisted creation log. If this provides the exact non-privileged verification pathways and API limitations you were looking for, please consider marking this response as the accepted answer! |

I am looking for documented, read-only verification methods for GitHub Codespaces using VS Code for the Web, without installing tools, granting Workspace Trust, accessing the Docker socket, using sudo, rebuilding, or exporting/uploading logs.
Is there a supported UI or API for viewing the effective dev-container configuration after provider overrides and image metadata are applied? I am interested in the effective user, userEnvProbe, lifecycle commands and their origins, and the relevant terminal/startup settings.
Is there a supported way for a codespace owner to correlate the actual container image with a pinned platform-manifest digest, including any derived image? I need to distinguish the declared image reference, manifest digest, and image/config ID.
Which existing logs cover initial creation and subsequent resumptions, and what are their retention, rotation, and coverage limits? I have read the documentation for View Creation Log and Export Logs, but would like clarification on historical coverage.
Which of these details can be inspected while the codespace remains stopped, and which require a running connection?
Please point to official documentation or a supported non-privileged viewing method. If any requested information is not exposed to the session owner, confirmation of that limitation would also help.
This is a general product-capability question, not a report of a security incident or a request to inspect a particular account. No private repository access or log attachments are requested.
