No, you cannot request or claim an inactive username.GitHub’s official Username Policy explicitly states that GitHub does not accept requests to release, transfer, or reclaim usernames simply because an account appears inactive or has no public contributions. Why GitHub Does Not Reassign "Inactive" AccountsInvisible Activity:A profile might look abandoned because it shows zero public contributions, but the user could still be active in ways that aren’t publicly visible (e.g., committing to private repositories, authenticating via SSH/OAuth, reading code, or using GitHub Actions).Preventing Broken Links & Attacks:Releasing existing handles can break Git clone URLs, submodule links, and package registries that depend on the original namespace. It also opens up risks for dependency hijacking if an old username is recycled. No Support Inactivity Queue:Years ago, GitHub occasionally entertained manual name-squatting tickets, but they retired that process. Usernames are now managed strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. The Only Exception: Trademark InfringementThe sole situation where GitHub reassigns an existing username is through a formal Trademark Violation claim. If you or your organization legally own a registered trademark for "resbit", you can file a complaint under the GitHub Trademark Policy. However, personal interest or first names do not qualify. What You Can Do InsteadSet your Display Name: You can keep @resbit-aidan as your handle URL while setting your profile Name to resbit (or Aidan / Resbit). Your display name is what shows up prominently on your profile header, commits, and comments.Alternative Variations: Consider clean variants such as resbit-dev, iamresbit, or resbitHQ. |

I'd like to have the username of "resbit" instead of my current one, "resbit-aidan", but the name is taken by an account created in October 2024 that has no contributions listed on their profile outside of creating their account. If the account is inactive I'd appreciate being able to use that username, but I'm unsure if that's allowed.
