At some point not possible to scroll chat down to see last messages #63
Eclipse IDE for Enterprise Java and Web Developers (includes Incubating components) - 2025-12 (4.38.0)
Platform
Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.19045.0 x64
(Windows 10)
Steps to reproduce
Chat with several iterations, sometimes with long Copilot answers, at some point scroll appears to be scrolled to the bottom, but there are more messages available. No way to see them.
Logs (optional)
No response
Expected behavior
I expect to see the entire chat content, especially newer messages, which currently are unavailable.
Actual behavior
Chat with several iterations, sometimes with long Copilot answers, at some point scroll appears to be scrolled to the bottom, but there are more messages available. No way to see them.
I confirm I have the same issue. We don't even see confirmation request by copilot and we are stuck in the middle of nowhere !
At least, a command to clear the windows (scroll history) would be great !
Sheng Chen (@jdneo) Unfortunately, the chat contains confidential information, and I cannot share it here.
Just have chat with many ,Messages and long answers from AI. At some point, you see during AI answering, the scrollbar position still moving (up, showing that chat grows), but moving the scrollbar down, does not change the position of the chat view. When you scroll it to very bottom, the chat view is not moving.
A colleague took this screenshot. You can see that in both chat windows the text is cut off. The scrollbar also suggests that there is more content. However, you cannot scroll down any further, neither with the arrow keys nor with the scrollbar.
Occurs for me in Eclipse 2025-09 with GitHub Copilot 0.15 too.
I looked at my conversation JSON file in <workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\com.microsoft.copilot.eclipse.core\conversations\<GithubProfile> for more information of when this happened:
After the 24th turn (turnId) finished, which was a turn from Copilot with Claude Sonnet 4.5
The JSON file is 1972 lines long and 152 KB big
I also noticed that already a few turns earlier, the prompt input field got very laggy when entering text. Maybe this is related?
Yes, I confirm that after a long chat session, even typing becomes very slow, and at some point, it does not scroll anymore. One other issue is that sometimes, the "stop" red button is not visible : we cannot stop a copilot that goes in a wrong direction !
Scrolling to the bottom not possible anymore (resizing the view helps but at some point you have to maximize the view)
Typing becomes very slow and unresponsive. You have like 500ms between each keystroke.
Solution idea: Maybe you need some kind of pagination/streaming. I dont need the whole chat available in the scroll pane. If i scroll to the top you could reload older chat stuff.

Yes, currently we also have perf issue when the chat session is long, too many swt widgets rendered. This could be something to explore

Is it possible to share any screenshot or record to help illustrate the issue?

We have the same problem and are trying to create a screenshot without including any confidential information.

Volker Goehrke (Materna) (@vgoehrke-materna) What is your eclipse version and the plugin version?
Is it stable to repro?
vgoehrke-materna commentedon Jan 21, 2026
Eclipse Version:
2024-12 (4.34.0), Build id: 20241128-0757
2025-03 (4.35.0), Build id: 20250306-0812
2025-12 (4.38.0), Build id: 20251204-0850
GitHub Copilot: 0.14.0
It occurred for us both with the stable build as well as with the nightly build.

This should be related with the MarkupViewer perf issue.
