[feat]: Add configurable auto-save for remote file editing #3186

Description

@BeastyZ

Feature request

Please add a configurable auto-save option to the File Editor.

When editing files in a remote project over SSH/SFTP, Emdash currently requires pressing Cmd+S to write changes back to the remote server. The current recovery-buffer auto-save is useful for crash recovery, but it does not actually save the file to disk.

Proposed behavior

  • Add an Auto Save setting, preferably with options such as:
    • Off
    • After delay
    • When focus changes
    • When the file is closed
  • Make it work for both local and remote projects.
  • Preserve the existing conflict detection and ETag protection.
  • Clearly show saving/saved/error status in the editor UI.

This would make remote editing more convenient and closer to the workflow provided by VS Code Remote SSH.

Environment

  • Project type: remote project over SSH/SFTP
  • Client: Emdash desktop
  • Requested on: 2026-09-11
