[FEATURE] Explore an optional file-metadata interoperability experiment #1800
Hi Basic Memory maintainers. I maintain MoobFS, an experimental GPL-2.0-only Linux stackable filesystem developed with AI assistance and human review/testing. This is a proposal for a small external experiment, not a request to add a kernel dependency to Basic Memory.
Problem This Feature Solves
Your note format already stores custom frontmatter fields such as status as searchable entity_metadata. I would like to evaluate whether making one such field queryable by other local file-based tools has any practical value. Basic Memory already supports metadata filtering; there is no demonstrated gap or performance improvement here.
Proposed Solution
In a disposable local Linux VM, mirror only a string status field from a small Markdown fixture into a typed xattr, then compare equality-query result sets with Basic Memory's existing metadata query. Markdown would remain canonical. The experiment would need to check edits, renames and replacement writes, including missing or stale xattrs. No adapter or result is available yet.
Alternative Solutions
Keep the existing database-backed metadata filtering. That remains the baseline; graph, full-text and semantic search would stay in Basic Memory.
