[UI feedback] Forced V2 interface destroys productivity for multi-project/multi-agent workflows (20+ sessions) #48837

Description

Feature hasn't been suggested before.

  • I have verified this feature I'm about to request hasn't been suggested before.

Describe the enhancement you want to request

Describe the problem

As of today, the option to switch back to the old GUI is completely gone ("你現在使用的是新版面 先前的版面已無法使用"). This forced update has severely disrupted my daily development workflow.

My Workflow & Pain Points

I manage a heavy, multi-project environment where I run more than 20 sessions simultaneously.

  1. AI Agent Delegation Broken: I treat each persistent session as a distinct "AI Employee" assigned to specific tasks. In the old interface, having them constantly visible in the sidebar allowed me to easily orchestrate and delegate tasks across different AI workers.
  2. Top Tabs Layout is Unusable: Moving these 20+ sessions into top tags/tabs makes it extremely difficult to track, read, and manage. It creates massive visual clutter.
  3. Multi-Project Blindspot: I need to work on multiple projects at the same time. With the new hidden/tabbed UI, I completely lose sight of what is happening in other projects and sessions.

The new interface might look "clean" for casual users, but for power users with 20+ active tasks, it is a massive regression in usability and speed.

Suggested Solution

Please bring back a layout option or a configuration toggle to permanently pin the persistent sessions panel to the sidebar, just like the old interface. Power users need structural visibility, not forced simplicity.

    This issue might be a duplicate of existing issues. Please check:

    If your request is covered by one of the above, please add a thumbs-up reaction to the existing issue rather than filing a new one. If your use case is distinct, please clarify the difference.

    My use case is distinct from the mentioned issues.

    While #48802 focuses on accidental session loss and #48835 focuses on worktrees, my feedback is specifically about the heavy multi-agent/multi-project orchestrations.

    I simultaneously manage 20+ active sessions as distinct AI employees assigned to different tasks. The top tab bar layout completely ruins the dense visual overview required to monitor and delegate tasks across 20+ parallel workflows in real-time. This is a severe regression in power-user efficiency that is not covered by the other reports.

    使用 ai 写了个脚本锁定旧版本布局, 我本机测试通过了

    I used ai to write a script that locks in the old version layout, and it passed testing on my machine.

    I totally agree. The new layout completely breaks the mental model that the previous layout encouraged. Hard to maintain easy visibility over multiple agents and multiple projects. Huge regression.

    Same pain here — running 20+ concurrent sessions and the new tab layout
    makes orchestration unmanageable. Put together an unofficial Windows build
    that keeps the old sidebar-based layout available:

    Not a permanent fix, just something to unblock multi-session workflows
    while the root cause gets sorted:

    @davidlopezsalvador

    I hit the same productivity wall with many concurrent sessions. This restores the old GUI on Windows Desktop as a stopgap:

    https://github.com/davidlopezsalvador/opencode-legacy-patch

    How it works: a same-length patch inside app.asar moves oldInterfaceSunset to 2099, so resolveNewLayoutDesigns(retired, ...) stops hard-coding the new layout, and app-update.yml is neutralized so the auto-updater cannot silently wipe the patch.

    • Tested on 1.18.34 -> 1.18.35 (Electron 42, Windows); applies with the app open in ~2 minutes; one-command rollback (-Mode restore).
    • Fail-safe: the script searches the literal dynamically and aborts unless it finds exactly 1 occurrence.
    • Caveats: Windows desktop only; updates frozen until you restore -> update -> patch (script included); unofficial, use at your own risk.

    I maintain the repo, feedback welcome. This is only a stopgap until a permanent official toggle ships.

    @alecerca

    The 20+ session case is where a terminal caps out: even after the V2 rework you're reading one transcript at a time and can't hold the shape of the whole fleet.

    I hit exactly this and went the other way — a desktop app where every sub-agent is its own live pane, with the project/git context in the same window: https://github.com/alecerca/ORCHESTRATOR (demo https://youtu.be/7CgfHGHYCKM). Not arguing against V2; just that past ~5 agents the bottleneck stops being the TUI and becomes the surface itself. Some of us are fine paying for a window.

    We're tracking this in #48882, so I'm closing this as a duplicate. Please follow that issue for updates.
