OpenCode 1.3.2 has ~75 seconds startup delay #19197

Closed as not planned

Description

@wukai8289

Description

OpenCode 1.3.2 has a consistent ~75 seconds startup delay on every launch, occurring after plugin loading and before bus initialization.

Environment

  • OpenCode Version: 1.3.2
  • OS: macOS Darwin 25.3.0 (Apple Silicon M1)
  • Bun Version: 1.3.10
  • Installation Method: curl

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install OpenCode 1.3.2 via curl
  2. Run opencode run "hello" or start TUI with opencode
  3. Observe ~75+ seconds delay before the AI responds

Evidence from Logs

INFO  2026-03-26T01:37:57 +663ms service=plugin path=opencode-gemini-auth@latest loading plugin
INFO  2026-03-26T01:39:13 +75917ms service=bus type=* subscribing

The 75-second gap occurs consistently between:

  • Plugin loading completion
  • Bus initialization start

What I've Tried

  • ❌ Disabled autoupdate in config
  • ❌ Reduced plugins to minimum (only essential auth plugins)
  • ❌ Cleared all caches (~/.cache/opencode/)
  • ❌ Set OPENCODE_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 environment variable
  • ❌ Disabled oh-my-opencode, opencode-sessions, opencode-direnv plugins

None of these changes reduced the startup delay.

Current Configuration

{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "model": "opencode/minimax-m2.5-free",
  "autoupdate": false,
  "plugin": [
    "opencode-antigravity-auth@latest",
    "opencode-notify@latest",
    "opencode-gemini-auth@latest",
    "opencode-openai-codex-auth@latest"
  ]
}

Timing Measurements

Run Total Time
1 1:30.77
2 1:29.06
3 1:37.80
4 1:25.88
5 1:22.75
6 1:23.95

Average: ~1:28 (88 seconds), with ~75 seconds being the fixed delay.

Additional Context

  • Network connectivity is working (HuggingFace, GitHub accessible)
  • Database is small (17 sessions, 46 messages, 576KB)
  • Cache size is reasonable (~532MB)
  • No MCP servers configured

Expected Behavior

OpenCode should start within 3-5 seconds, not 75+ seconds.

Possible Causes

  1. Internal network request timeout (update check, telemetry, etc.)
  2. Bun runtime initialization issue
  3. Missing timeout configuration for internal operations

Please investigate this performance regression. Thank you!

    This issue might be a duplicate of existing issues. Please check:

    If your issue is specifically about the 75-second delay tied to plugin loading (and not just a blank screen), it may still be worth keeping open as a distinct performance regression in 1.3.2.

    Just leaving this here for anyone with a similar issue: In my case it was a ton of plugins calling npm on startup for update check and my ISP having known issues with slow npm calls. What helped was using npm registry to find the closest mirror. Cuts down startup time by at least 5x.

    Opencode would massively benefit from a more verbose startup for sure.

    npm config set registry https://registry.npmmirror.com
