Ctrl + Shift + Click to instantly batch-delete sprites #9181
1. The Pain Point: The Disruptive Native Confirmation Dialog
Recently, the native Scratch editor introduced a mandatory sprite deletion confirmation dialog. While this design choice is welcoming for beginners to prevent accidental misclicks, it acts as a severe "workflow interrupt" for advanced power users.
When managing large-scale projects, remixing complex games, or importing third-party asset packs that contain dozens of temporary templates/costumes, creators frequently need to clean up and reorganize their sprite pane. Having to move the mouse to click "Confirm" on a popup for every single sprite is extremely tedious, repetitive, and time-consuming. It breaks the creative momentum.
2. The Core Value: Unlocking High-Speed Batch Deletion
Currently, there is no native way to quickly delete multiple sprites in a row. This addon introduces a highly requested capability for advanced scratchers. Power users can clean up a cluttered workspace in seconds rather than minutes, drastically improving the overall development experience on the platform.
3. Safety vs. Speed: A Better Alternative to Global Disabling
Unlike a global "turn off all delete confirmation popups" toggle (which leaves users vulnerable to accidental clicks later on if they forget they disabled it), this solution introduces a conditional bypass. It keeps the protection active during normal editing, but grants immediate, frictionless destruction power whenever the user chooses to activate it via a deliberate physical combination.
4. Respecting Scratch Tradition
This concept perfectly reimagines the philosophy of the classic "Scissors Tool" from Scratch 1.4/2.0. Experienced creators have long missed the ability to perform rapid, consecutive deletions, and this addon brings that professional-grade efficiency back into modern Scratch.
How this addon works
1. User Interaction Flow (The Logic)
The implementation should rely on detecting keyboard modifier states during a mouse click event:
The user holds down the Ctrl and Shift keys simultaneously on their keyboard.
While holding the keys, the user performs a Left Click on a sprite thumbnail in the sprite pane, or directly clicks its close/delete icon (x).
The extension intercepts the click event, bypasses/suppresses Scratch's native modal confirmation injection entirely, and executes the underlying deletion function immediately.
The sprite vanishes instantly without generating any visual popup or browser alert.
2. Seamless Consecutive Deletions (Batching)
As long as Ctrl + Shift remain pressed down, the user can move their mouse and click on multiple sprites one after another.
Each click will instantly delete the targeted sprite. This creates a smooth, rapid "click-to-erase" batch deletion experience.
3. Edge Cases & Safeguards
Regular Clicks: If a user clicks a sprite or its delete icon normally without holding both Ctrl + Shift, the native Scratch confirmation dialog should appear exactly as intended by the Scratch official team.
Mac Compatibility: The addon should map Ctrl to Cmd (Command) on macOS (Cmd + Shift + Click), following standard operating system shortcuts for cross-platform consistency.
Keyboard-only focus: This shortcut should only trigger when the mouse is interacting with items inside the sprite pane area to prevent unexpected behavior in other parts of the editor interface.
Possible alternatives
There are two highly practical alternatives for integrating this feature:
Option A: Merge into "Delete sprites without confirmation" (Recommended)
Instead of creating a standalone addon, this feature could be added as a customizable option or a sub-setting within the existing "Delete sprites without confirmation" addon.
Currently, that addon completely disables the native popup globally.
We can add a mode/toggle inside its settings called: "Only bypass confirmation when holding Ctrl+Shift". This keeps the code organized and upgrades an existing addon with a much safer, professional workflow.
Option B: Merge into "Editor keyboard shortcuts"
Alternatively, since this introduces a new keyboard modifier mechanism, it could be categorized under the "Editor keyboard shortcuts" addon as a specialized hotkey feature for the sprite pane area.
Alternative Alternative (If no addon is used)
If merging is not preferred, a global toggle to "Enable advanced modifier key actions" would also work, but integrating it directly into the deletion-related addon (Option A) makes the most logical sense for user discovery.
Additional context
I have been following Scratch Addons for a long time and really appreciate the amazing work the team does to make the Scratch editor so much better!
Since the community has a lot of advanced developers who build massive projects, I believe this enhancement will be highly appreciated by power users. It perfectly bridges the gap between the new native safety features and high-efficiency asset management.
Thank you so much for considering this suggestion! I'm happy to provide more clarification or discuss this further if the maintainers have any questions.
"Delete sprites without confirmation" already exists and doesn't require using any modifier keys. If you delete something by accident, it can be recovered from the Edit menu.
A multi-select addon (Multi-select sprites and assets #7369) would allow the user to select a set of sprites and delete all of them with a single confirmation.

Isn't the "Delete sprites without confirmation" addon enough? I doubt batch deleting sprites is very common but I could see the use for costumes.

I think there are several better alternatives:
